View Full Version : Mith's as the world turns...
Dangit. Let me explain. Prior to today, I put water in my test vile for nitrItes. Initially, the blue solution would turn violet (1ppm). After waiting for five minutes like the directions say, the water was almost clear. I take that to mean zero.
My nitrAtes were still horrifically high, maybe 140-160. So I figure OK, my nitrItes are zero now and I can do the water change to bring down the nitrAtes.
I changed about 70% of the water. Immediately after, I tested for nitrItes. Initially like always it was 1ppm. BUT... after the recommended five minutes for accurate results, it was STILL very much 1ppm. The nitrAtes were maybe 150ppm.
How is this possible? How can I have zero nitrItes (almost clear solution) to a strong 1ppm....
(Mith has 45 pointed at tank)...

Have you ever tested your tap water?
Yes I have. My tap is zero nitrItes. The solution is always blue from the getgo, it never changes to violet like it does with the tank water. Only difference is, the tank water turns light gray, almost clear after waiting the five minutes that the test directions recommended.

I'll bet it's the dechlor causing false positives, you should wait 24hrs after a WC to test
Lady Hobbs
02-21-2009, 03:41 PM
As long as you didn't do a bunch of cleaning, that water change didn't hurt anything. The nitrate tester only goes to 160 and your levels may have been much higher. Perhaps this water change will kick the rites into finishing up.
Something is holding those rites from finishing up and perhaps this water change will do it for you. Not to worry, Sheba. You are still on track.
PS.....I think you are having this problem from not cutting back on the ammonia when you should have. But you're still OK.
Algenco
02-21-2009, 03:46 PM
How about doing another big WC to lower the nitrates, add Ammonia at 2ppm and check in the AM?
Lady Hobbs
02-21-2009, 03:52 PM
I agree! !!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure what's happened here is a "burn out" from over dosing with the ammonia. First, you forgot to drop back to half the dosage when you should have and then you were adding ammonia more than once a day.

Sorry Mith. I thought you had dosed more than once a day a few days there. My boo-boo.
No, but I DID keep the amonia level too high after I saw trItes... I was maintaining 4-5... so I farked up... sigh

Ya, but it will make me feel better... LOL... just like telling that clerk "Shame on you" re the dyed fish. I don't always expect good results, sometimes I'm just going for the "feel good" effect... hehe
OH FFS!
Just had the poo scared out of me! I was in herer (my computer room) typing on my cycle website when I thought I'd check on the tank. I turned "just a little" hot water on so the heater wouldn't have so much cold water to heat up.
Well, I get to my room and at first glance, it appears that the whole tank's over flowing! ARRRRRRRRRRGH@!
I ran to the faucet and turned it off immediately! Ran to the tank to start bailing the water.... and as luck (maybe) would have it, it wasn't over flowing, but the hot water (too much obviously) in the mix was too much. The whole tank above the water line was fogged like a shower... ROFL....
So I turned off the hot water and now I'm finishing up with only cold water. My heater will just have to heat the rest of the water.
Now you're thinkiing.... well Mith, HOT WATER!!! Well, it wasn't really hot.... I'm guessting 90° maybe? So hopefully I won't have killed all my bacteria... LOL
Oh the Humanity!

Add your dechlorinator the same time you are filling the tank. Doesn't matter what kind but add enough for your sized tank and too much will not hurt, either. You can not overdose and too much is better than too less.
Prime, Start Right, Amquel, Stress Zyme, etc, etc. There's 50 different kinds but always refill and add that dechlorinator..........unless you have well water, of course.

The above is NOT out of the question!
I'm SO fk'n mad right now... all this time I've been cycling without using a dechlorinator.... I need to go cool off...
Lady Hobbs
02-21-2009, 07:32 PM
Mith, your tank cycled so that means you are fine or it never would have cycled. Chlorine leaves the water after sitting so I'm sure the chlorine that was in the water depleted itself after it had sat there. However, you also used Stress Zyme last week and THAT is a dechlorinator.
But, unless you have a well, you must always use a dechlorinator or you will kill your bacteria. That's why we tell everyone to clean their filter media in tank water because we know tank water has dechlorinator in it already.

Don't mean to sound picky but just so we dont get Mith confused about using products, stress zyme is not a dechlorinator, STRESS COAT is a dechlorinator.thumbs2:

I just used stress COAT... I HAD used stress zyme the past two weeks... (bacteria)... but TODAY I just put in 6 caps of stress COAT which is the amount for 125 gal tank.
Stress COAT will remove amonia too... why then am I still adding amonia?

Mith, it sounds like what you described with your nitrite test is exactly what happened to me. If the drops turned purple in the bottom of the tube, you are HIGH off the chart. I did the same thing. It will develop to a clear almost blue-ish color, leading you to think it's 0ppm, and then to a light green long after the 5 minutes. If you did a large water change, do another test after the water circulates for a while. Get it down to a color that is readable on the test card. When you are near the end of the cycle, those drops will be light blue in the bottom of the tube, even when you still may show up to 1-2ppm. Hope this all makes sense.

I would add the nitrite test drops. Before I shook the vile, the drops turned violet/purple (I don't know my colors... but it was 1ppm). After allowing the vile to sit for the recommended FIVE minutes, the solutoin turned to a very light gray, almost clear. NOT the blue that's on the nitrIte chart.
Just to make sure the kit was working, I tested tap water. The blue solution remained blue even after shaking it.
NOW.. I do a nitrIte test and instead of turning light gray after five minutes, it REMAINS violet. So a HUGE water changed made the test go from light gray after five minutes to a solit violet which stays violet.
I must have changed 140% of the water in two changes. When I was done, I tested. NitrAtes still 150 and nitrItes as described above. THEN I added 1-2ppm pure amonia.
THEN NOW I'm told to use a dechlorinator. I added SIX cap fulls (amount for 125 gallons...
That's where I'm at now. Now Im wondering what it meant when the nitrIte test tube turned light gray and not blue.... I guess the light gray is not the same as the blue.
So now you know EXACTLY where I am now and what I've done today... I'm willing to wait and be patient... but GDMFSOB I'm getting really frusrated.

Mith, hard to believe it but fishless is actually easier than cycling with fish. You could have used fish with that size tank right from the get-go but honestly, I think you and all the members at AC would have had a nervous break-down by now. Instead of being done with your cycle, you'd be just starting it, wondering daily if you needed to do a water change, how many fish you should add, etc. It would not have been pretty.

I used to have a partner who always liked to stop at In and Out burgers on the way to jail. The cashier always had to look twice. And no, we never fed the prisoner....but he got to smell OUR food LOL

No you wouldn't....I WAS supposed to get off at 11:00...its now 11:40 and I'm here babysitting a crashed car that someone crashed and then abandon! So now I get to sit here waiting for the owner so I can tell her what great friends she has....the person she loaned her car to crashed and then left her car! LOL.
Its not like cops on TV because for every five minutes of fun, there's 4 hours of paperwork! Trust me, the paperwork gets old
REAL fast!

Nah Mith I don't want to be a cop! I don't have the patience - I would be in trouble for shooting the stupid people!
I thank all those that are willing to do that job - because I couldn't do it!

When I graduated the academy in 83, we hjad a female cadet who quit just before graduation. She quit because she realized that she couldn't shoot someone. Shame she couldn't have figured that out in the first couple weeks of the academy!

Wow a lot of work to go through to decide you couldn't do it!

I was actually going to be a cop. Took the qualifying test and all was fine but I was too short. At that time, a woman had to be 5'4" and I was 5'2". Then I thought I'd be a nurse and found out I had to take classes in Latin. That one got blown out the window, too. My daughter is going to college for nursing now and Latin is not a requirement for her. They have changed so many things over the years.

Hobbs failed the polygraph because she ran a rum running ring back in the 1920's:hmm3grin2orange:

Hey, my siter's a nurse! It's a lot of hard work though. My sister's no spring chicken anymore and she works the ER. Very hard for her physically.... I could never do it. I admire those who can. I have work overtime in one of the county hospitals and been in the er when they brought accident victims in... it's gross... LOL
