View Full Version : Final fish for my 31g...

So I think I would like to put one more fish in my 31g reef, and I would like to hear what you would put in if you were in my shoes. There are a couple of restrictions though:

1. No Jumpers, I have an open top
2. No possible SPS nippers, so clown gobies are out
3. Needs to be small, basically a nano fish
4. Needs to get along with my O. Clowns and a Royal Gramma

I was kind of leaning towards a blue reef chromis, chalk bass, red-headed goby, or a fairy wrasse...but I would love to hear any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

How small are you talking. How about a falco hawkfish? They don't get much bigger then a female o-clown (I think 3 inches). It gets along great with our o-clowns and leaves our sps alone. Plus its fun to watch and likes people (very personable, always greets us when were near the tank)

I'll check them out labnjab..thanks for the suggestion!

I guess I should say that it doesn't have to be tiny, it just has to be small enough for my tank (which is basically the size of a Red Sea Max.) I just didn't want people suggesting tangs or something :)

A tail spot blenny would make a nice candidate.

The owner of my LFS goes to the wholesalers on Friday, and I told him to look out for 3 different fairy wrasses (solar, exquisite, lubbocks). According to our site profiles, all 3 are ok for a 30g tank.

If he picks up one of those I will take it. If not, he is going to try and get me a yellow watchman or a tialspot. (thanks Cocoa and Kaybee!)

I ended up getting the solar wrasse. He picked up a Lubbocks too, but the solar looked much nicer. I think the one I got might be a different sex than the one in the picture? Anyway, this is the best pic. I could get of mine today:

Very beautiful acquistion!
I don't believe it's a solar wrasse, though.
Looks more like an orange-back wrasse/cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis (even though in the photo the back appears yellow).

Check out the skills on Kaybee!!!

Nice work. I think it is an orange back.

I was going to just take Mark's (the owner of my LFS) word for it, but after I posted here last night, I compared the pics and it just didn't look right. I found a thread on a different forum about fairy wrasses, and then I saw the orange back...and I said oh no!!!

I think he is an awesome fish, but the only thing that upsets me, is that I spent a while researching which fish would be ok in my tank, and then the fish I try to get turns out to be the wrong one. I couldn't find a good reference for tank size on that fish, so I am not quite sure what to do. I sure don't want to try to catch him!!!!

Your orange back will max out at about 3", give or take half an inch. I am pretty sure a 70g or larger is recommended due to their need for swimming room.

Nice fish!
