I just bought a 75 gallon so my oscar is going to be transfered over from my 29 gallon. The 75 gallon has a fluval 405 canister filter system. As far as cycling is concerned, can I just take the BB filter from my 29 gallon and put it in the canister filter for the time being without having to worry about cycling the new 75 gallon? Thanks in advance.

Yes, as long as you don't add any new fish right away, you should be fine...The bacteria is already present to handle the bioload from the Oscar...

Hmm thats what I thought. How long do you think it will take the BB to establish themselves in the new media? Also, how long should I wait until introducing another fish into the aquarium? Thanks again.

Just add others slowly...so as to allow the bacterial growth to adjust. What are you planning on adding?

Hmm I really dont know just yet. Maybe a JD or something else. I do think its smart to give the 75 gallons of cold water a day or so to warm up though.

Sorry to ask so many questions. I'm thinking about adding several river rocks to the aquarium. I know If I were to get them from an actual stream I'd need to boil them, but what about purchasing them from a retail store. Would there still be a need to boil the rocks? I figure better safe than sorry.

Do not boil the rocks!Boiling rocks can explode!
Just use boiling water and pour it on top of the rocks in a bucket or sink.Give them a good scrub and rinse again.
You should also pour a bit of vinegar on the rocks before you start. If it fizzes its going to affect your ph.

Seems vinegar plays an important role in preparing and cleaning aquariums. I may have to bring the vinegar with me and test before I purchase the rocks. Thanks.

that would be a good idea, good luck rock hunting:19:
Rock explode when you boil them. I never knew that. What I would do is a least leave him in the tank for a week and let bateria grow in your tank and filter. Do a water check to see if everything is ok. Maye do a water change. Then congratulation you oscar has moved in to a bigger home:hmm3grin2orange:

Wet rocks in fires I have seen first hand explode. Sounded like a gun shot and high velocity shrapnel went flying. I am surprised I wasn't killed.:14: They explode when the core of the rock reaches >212 F and the water inside boils, if its trapped then extreme pressure generates until the rock explodes. Smaller rocks you should be ok boiling since any steam doesn't have far to travel to the surface of the rock. But then again its best not to try your luck with exploding rocks. thumbs2:
