I had the day off from work and got very bored. I had an aqualifter sitting around that I never used and thought of a way to put it to use. I drilled a small hole in the top of my skimmer and inserted an airline to the bottom of the collection cup and attached it to the intake side of the aqualifter. I then put the output side in a 1 gallon jug. Now instead of turning off my skimmer every few days to empty the collection cup, I just flip on the aqualifter and it sucks it dry. Now I just have to turn off the skimmer during a weekly water change to clean out the neck. The biggest reason I did this is because after every water change the skimmer goes crazy and produces a lot of skimmate, and rather then turning the skimmer off every few minuets to empty it, I'll leave the aqualifter on till it settles down.

the beauty of the aqualifter is its basically a vacuum/air pump, so if it runs dry it doesn't harm the pump, also, it can be turned on for a second, and when you turn it off it starts a siphon.

I know some people attach "overflow" hoses to the bottom of the collection cup, but mines still under warranty and I didn't want to drill into the hard clear plastic and risk breaking it
