Hey, I was at the fish store today and took a couple pictures. Can anyone tell me if these fish are compatible? I didn't recognize the bass looking ones, but I do kind of recognize the blue one. Here's a picture if you can recognize them.

I didn't get the names because there were so many in the tank and I neglected to ask the clerk because I forgot... (was looking for more amonia testing bottles)...

Anyway, here's the picture. Can anyone tell me if they're compatible?

Ok I"m numbering them:
1 2
3
4

I'm not 100% but
2 - looks like a skinny venustus
3 - melanochromis maingano
1 & 4 I don't recognise - but I'm sure others do. And they will correct me if I'm wrong about 2 & 3
Both of those are aggressive - but the maingano is an omnivore and shouldn't eat as much protein as a venustus. But I'm no where near an expert :D

I googled the ones you said and you seem to be correct! I'm glad I did because I really don't like the adults. The other one in picture four I do like. If someone can come up with a guess on that one I'd google that too.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if the blue one is compatible? They had all these fish in the same tanks...

The blue one I have is honestly a ********. And he's just a baby. They don't get along with others of the same shape - check out these profiles - if you have more than one melanochromis they like to fight....

Oh FFS! Why is it that ever gdmfsob fish I choose is bad... LOL Well thanks though, I'm glad you pointed that out to me.

Man, I really like the fish in picture #4... maybe I'll just get 30 of those... LOL

Don't get me wrong you can have him!
It's just I thought you were going the less aggro peacock route.
Go here:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_75g.php#east_africa_riverine
And look under
Larger, More Aggressive Mbuna Setup
I like the idea of
• Labeotropheus trewavasae
• Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos - maingano
• Metriaclima estherae
• Labidochromis species
But you'll need caves for that. The maingano digs too - like spends hours scooping gravel and spitting it out....

OUTSTANDING! That's the kind of link I needed! Now I can spend more time researching that site to see what I need, and yes, I was going for the less aggressive Peacock fish. I'm still leaning towards those, but I really like the fish in number 4 a lot. Hopefully I'd be able to squeak that fish into the scenerio. I'm not totally against just getting those type of fish, they're kind of cool looking. Who knows.. seems I change my mind more than I change my undies...

Thanks for the link though...thumbs2:

No worries Mith :19:
With peacocks - my only comment against them is that the ones I've gotten and seen seem to get uglier as they get older. It's a bit of a guess what they'll look like as they grow...

Well poop! This is one issue I've been noticing. For example, there's one particular fish that starts out with yellow and brown stripes the length of it's body.... but as it gets older, it just turns to a dark brown. So really, unless you KNOW what they change into as they mature, you're really taking a gamble! Now the site that I've been looking at the fish, they pretty much do show the adults as far as I can tell, but again, when you buy a fish in the store, there are SO many different varieties that really, do you ever really KNOW what fish you're getting?

I suppose my next task is to find out what those fish (in photo #4) look like as adults... although at the fish store where I plan on getting my fish, they were fairly large specimines. I can't imagine that they'd change TOO much more.

Thats why you gotta research :hmm3grin2orange:. Check out the difference between a juvenile and an adult duboisi. Complete change. Electric yellows are one which don't change much! Although some I've seen get very black stripes and others not so much... Hahaha I guess it is always a gamble!
