I placed an order for my new aquarium yesterday and I'm eagerly anticipating its arrival! Now I can be aqua-savvy and part of the cool group like you guys! (Okay, so it's a teeny weeny tank, but that still counts, right?)
Check out my new signature...it reflects how very proud I am! thumbs2:

Ill just give you a prewarning this hobby is very addicting. I too started off small with a 10g tank. 4 months later I have a 55g and a 29g. And Ive been dreaming of a 180g that the fish store has for sale. Man I want that tank.

Congrats! It's such a fun hobby, I'm fairly new at it myself. I really am loving it though, and I can't wait to see some little Platy and Guppy fry :):1luvu:

I'm going to piggyback on everyone here saying that this is definitely one addictive hobby. I was given a 45 gallon 6 months ago. Now I have a 29g and a 5g, and would have kept on going if I wouldn't have to leave the country for a few months.
Nautilus, I've been eyeballing a 180 on sale here, too. I keep daydreaming about all the things I could do with it, where I could put it, I've even hand written out a few plans for it! LOL

Welcome to the club and (here comes the band wagon) be wary of any MTS symptoms.
Now's the time to plan out what you want to do with the aquarium. I'll start of by suggesting a fishless cycle. The worst thing that can happen now is that you buy a bunch of pretty fish and they all go belly up because of ammonia poisoning.
So what y'a gonna put in your tank?

No chance for that here. My true heart lies in animal welfare...not simply keeping pets but helping those that are needy...and there's a lot more neglected and abused domestic animals out there needing help than abused fish that need homes. I can't put the the bulk of my energy into simply homing fish, aside from the few that I would own, having an aquarium is simply self-serving (fun, relaxing, and beautiful, but nonetheless self-serving). My calling in this world is to help other less fortunate species that have been mistreated by man.

I'm not sure what MTS symptoms is, but if I run into it, I'll use caution! I read the e-book here before I purchased anything (and asked you guys a LOT of questions that I'm sure you grew tired of answering!) because I wanted to be sure that I could maintain the tank and that I knew exactly what to do and what to expect. I really wanted to be prepared and not just some ignorant bozo buying a tank on a whim and having the fish constantly die because of ignorance and ill-preparation. The reason why I'm getting a desktop tank is simple: I have cats. I have 11 of them, if anyone read my sig. Cats jump, and they will undoubtedly think the top of a tank is a stable place to sit and contemplate the world. I can't imagine too many tanks (or its inhabitants) being too happy with jumping cats, especially when cats don't always have great trajectory when it comes to new and unfamiliar surfaces (ie., tank will have fallen and smashed onto the floor and I will be forced to live out my days as a second-degree manslaughter murderer of my wee fish). I chose a desktop because I can sit and enjoy it while I spend time on my computer (which, since I failed to mention, is located in an off-limits-for-cats bedroom). I thought about getting a larger tank, but that would involve a purchase of a stand as well as finding another spot to put it into. I don't think it would do it justice to have a beautiful larger tank sitting in a spare bedroom with no one to enjoy it.
As far as what I'd stock it with, I think I'll go with neon tetras. I like teeny weeny small fish, as I can have a small school instead of just one or two bigger fish. I'd just love to have tiger barbs but I recently learned they get kind of large for my tank size, and most importantly I don't want any barb-related homicides in my tank! I don't want to mix breeds unless there's an environmental reason for doing so.
I even ordered some decorations because I have a theme in mind. The theme might not work out and I may have to go to plan B. I'll know better when my tank and all the supplies come in.

That size tank would be perfect for some Bettas, you could get a male and 4 or 5 females I think. They are very personable and all of ours like to come to the front of the tank and greet you. And getting some you could save them from the horrible conditions they are kept in at the LFS, so they might be for you on 2 levels. Just a thought.
