Wanting to make it a Reef. What do you all think of these?

I've heard in terms of value and quality, they are the way to go. Dr Foster and Smith has them for a pretty good price, like 180 for the 12 gallon deluxe version with the good lighting.

That is a pretty good price. I'm in Canada though, so I wonder what the shipping will be? I'm gonna have to take a look.

It looks like they only ship within the U.S. :( Maybe I'll have to buy one in a store around here. Seems like none of them have websites though

Try ebay

I found this. Shipping is gonna be a killer, but it still beats paying ripoff LFS rates (My LFS charges 300 for the 12 gallon deluxe)

Thanks Chrona :) I emailed the seller to find out what shipping would be to Ontario. Shipping within the U.S. was $48

Not saying it will happen but Ive heard of those cracking just out of the blue and actually just missed one doing that at my lfs by a few minutes and it was set up for a few months.

I hear the Oceanic Nano Cubes are one of the better brands. I've seen these at the LFS for 120.00 (for the 12 gallon). I would be a little weary of some of the off brands. Make sure to do some research before you buy.

Well, after reading the post about setting up a simple reef tank, and that bigger is better and easier to take care of..I think I've changed my mind on the Nano, at least for now. I think I'll wait till I can turn my 40 fresh into a salt...when I have about $2-3000 to blow, so it'll be a while! lol.

Isnt keeping a reef like, uber hard to do?

I'm sure it is a challenge, but I'm not one to back down from one...with the appropriate finances:hmm3grin2orange: Right now unfortunately, the finances don't exist. lol

There is so much info on the net that anyone willing to put the effort in should be able to keep a nice reef tank. They do take some effort and they are harder to keep than freshwater tanks, but if you can read and are willing to do the work required you should be fine. That is if you have the $$$ to spend. Being able to afford the right stuff makes everything much more easy.

It can be difficult, but with enough knowledge certainly feasable. I hope to set up a reef tank myself one day

Is it possible to set up a reef in a 10 gallon?

10 gallon is possible but it will still be expensive. Anything under a 20 gallon is considered a nano reef.

i take it live sand would be needed. And also no fish in it?

I was considering a single oscellaris clown in a 12 gallon jbl nanocube. I think the idea is to start with fish, then move up to live rock, and eventually a full blown reef. They make these little mini protein skimmers for nanocubes too, that are only like 20 bucks. Not sure how effective they are. I read the simple and cheap saltwater setup, but to be honest, I'm a perfectionist. I would much rather have small and really nice than big but low quality. Financially, it's the better thing to do, since the cheap setup would just bug the heck out of me and drive me to buy hundreds more in upgrades...lol.

I was doing some reading, and apparently many people will remove all biological/chemical filtration from the back and just stuff it with cheap live rock rubble they get from their LFS. Sounds like a cool idea

A couple of clownfish are cool. I love their arm fins.
Mini skimmers are pretty good
