Hi guys.

I was wondering if any of you that have been in the hobby a good few years have like me accumulated any fish keeping spares?

I have 2 big polly boxes full of spare parts from filters to heaters to little food pots full of extra rubber suckers, diaphragms for air pumps etc.

So what have you guys accumulated over the years?

Yes...me too...between fish and reptiles I think we have 4-5 spare tanks 20g and under...old filters that still work (that were upgraded) to be used in an emergency. I have a UV sterilizer that came with the 55g (used SW set-up) that I don't want. Dunno if it's worth the effort to sell it.

And other bits and pieces...

I hate to get rid of any tanks, you never know when you'll need one for an emergency or an unexpected arrival...or a QT tank...

Yeah, I got a ton of stuff layin' around in a big rubbermaid bin. Filters, filter parts, extra slate rock, driftwood, other decorations... too much to list.. ya never know when something's going to come in handy!

Oh yeah, got a bucket full of nic-nacs. From old instruction manuals, to fake plants I don't like anymore. (can't get rid of them tho, I might need them one day!!!)

Me too...two rubbermaid containers. Funny thing is...when I need something, I can never find it!

I am a pack rat. I go to garage sales and buy broken filters and broken everything else. I have like three boxes.. I just sorted through all of the other day..

A few years? I've only been at this about 8 months or so, and have a small closet full of "fish stuff". Somehow the stuff just seems to accumulate, but can't really throw it away. Maybe somehow someday you'll need that decoration, or that odd looking part which you have no idea what it's for.

The worst for me is filters. I have thousands of HOB filters. I have one that was made in the 1980's and its pretty loud (had to try it)

How do you all store this excess stuff but keep the fishy smell down to a minimum? Some of the fake plants, rocks, ships and other do hickeys, were fairly stinky, so i dunked them bleach water, rinsed and then let them dry, then put them in large ziplock bags.

I bleach everything that I store, so it's ready if I need it. There is no smell...

Mine are just cleaned in tap water and hung up to air dry. :ssmile:

It gets a thorough clean if it is to be used again though

Glad i'm not alone.

I have only been keeping fish for two years and have three spare tanks with all the gear that goes with them from three different substrates to more bog wood than you could shake at a cat. In fact I have taken over the brick built shed lol. And as for meds and lotions and potions from stress coat to garlic - but its all good fun. I think I could open up a shop.

I clean out the junk a couple times a year. Give it to my daughter or granddaughter that got my spare tanks. Have now given 3 tanks to family members.

A 20g, 5.5g, HOB filter, ugfs and piping, powerheads, hoods, and some filter bags. The ugfs, powerheads, and filter bags are all in a cardboard box. The rest is in one or the other empty tanks.

I had a ton of stuff (actually mostly reptile tanks) but we moved a year and a half ago and I'm down to just two empty tanks I picked up after moving, and some misc. plants and junk that I don't use since I discovered the real thing. Before that, I had an empty 40 breeder, two 20 longs, a 15 high and a couple 10's. Only the 15 was good for fish. Gave them all away!

Yeah once you had 20 tanks, you get use to the smell. I have three big tubs full of water just in case and for w/c and i have two filters each and there is a couple of goldfish in there to keep in cycled..

I hav a couple of large rubbermaids full of used power filters, internal type filters, a large skimmer, airpumps, heaters, couple of random broken canisters i could peace together and make a filter in a pinch. yeah i got quite a few tanks myself along with bunches of fake plants which i dont and most likely wont use, since i have all real ones now, and a bunch of caves, rocks, filters, meds...and a whole bunch of food! my aunt does a animal rescue and they do pickups at walmart which gives them all their non sellable(if thats even a word lol) pet supplies, so i have boxes of food thats just been dented or is missing a cap, lots of it for fish i dont even have! plus we have like 2 boxes of filters that have been returned for whatever. i just have yet to go through them.... :help:

I'm embarrassed to say I had to build a storage building to put all the spares I've collected since I entered the hobby in 1972. Still pick up the odd aquarium and aquarium what-not at yard and estate sales, knowing what I buy will just go into storage, since I have no more room for show aquariums.

It's hard to throw stuff out. Just the other night I started throwing out stuff. I've come to the conclusion that it's easier to replace something when you need it as opposed to storing it for ten years until you need it. That's a "Pack Rat" mentality. But then, it's always nice when you need something and you know someone who "just happens to have it"... in their garage... LOL. SO I just say it depends on your state of mind.

I had a Fluval canister outside in a cabinet for YEARS... I suppose I could have pulled it out and fixed it up, but it's just easier for me to start over... specially since things get more modern as time progresses... why use outdated stuff when there's "new and improved" stuff available...
