I am curious about our connection speeds. When you connect are you on dial-up or high speed?

If you are high speed, which is it? DSL? Cable? Satellite? Anyone have a T1? T3??????

Cable, and it's not even the good kind. It's the bargain plan, capped at like 800kbps :/

I WISH I had a T3 line or a commercial dsl line. The ultimate weapon for the Internet junkie...lol

I have a slower package dsl but it works for me. To be honest, I was running a 6mb cable connection before and I can't tell the difference. I play games online and download everything and the dsl is just as fast. Most websites don't allow you to use the speed a T1 has to offer so why bother?

I just checked my speed at
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
and I am only at 1.2megabits

Chrona
02-08-2007, 04:30 AM
761 kilobits per sec :/

So my max download speed is only gonna be like 95kbps, which is pretty slow for big files like movies and whatnot. Oh, and I wasn't referring to downloads from website, I meant p2p ;)

f1oored

What p2p are you using? I rarely get over 100kbps using bit torrent and DC++.

Wow we are really nerding it up tonight lol.

Werd, trying to figure out why these darn equations won't balance for this lab due tomorrow, so I'm burning the midnight oil.

On campus, I use DC++, offcampus I use Azureus. On campus, it's a direct ethernet connection, since most colleges run a hub or two, so my download speed is 1+ megabyte/sec, which for me, is "poopinyourpants" fast. At home, I use Azureus, which works a bit faster for me than Bitlord or Bittorrent. Obviously, I'm hard capped at 95kbps by my ISP, but I've gotten 200-250 kbps download speeds at a friends house. It's just a matter of picking the right torrents ;)

I'll give azureus a try. Now I'm going to bed though. Exam tomorrow.

cheers

Not sure what all of those other words mean.....ethernet is the only one I recognize:11: but I ran the test (cool link btw) and came up with 2.5 megabits per second with 3.3 sec 1mb file download!!! I am using adelphia cable high speed internet, with a wireless router/network set up (we have 3 puters running in this house). I just got my new puter last night and still have to get my router for it and then whoa.....watch out!!!

Ok I am with Kimmers on this one...lol I have no clue what any of those words were I understood, Test, DSL, Ethernet...lol so I just went to the link and ran the test..here are my results

Communications 2.7 megabits per second
Storage 333.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.1 seconds
Subjective rating Great
Don't have any clue what all that means besides the word great...lol So I guess I must be doing something right.

The rating that the site gives you (in either kiloBITS per second or megaBITS per second) shows your bandwidth, ie, how fast your internet company lets stuff move to and from your computer. However, a much more common unit, for say, storage, is the byte, which is 8 bits. Think megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB) for stuff like hard drives and memory. Therefore, your max download speed is the bit rating divided by 8. Hence, if you had a 8 megabit per second connection, it would be the equivalent of 1 megabyte per second. This means you could download a 5 megabyte song in 5 seconds.

Oh and T1 and T3 are just names for different types of connections, just like DSL or cable. T1 and especially T3 just happen to have a MUCH larger bandwidth than the rest and so are ridiculously expensive, which is why they are used mostly by companies, universities, etc.

at work, 5.4 mb/sec.

I'll have to check what my connection speed at home is.

Neat site f1oored.

Even with it all broken down like that I still say...Huh!?!

Think of bandwidth as a pvc pipe in your house. The bigger the pipe, the more stuff that can get through. T3 and T1 lines would be the equivalent of like.....10 foot diameter drainage pipe. :)

I have Mediacom high speed cable. I thought it was pretty good until I looked at some of the stats for some of y'all. My stats were:

551.6 kilobytes per second for communications
67.3 kilobytes per second for storage
15.2 seconds for 1mb file download

Oh well, it's still better than dial-up anyday. I would give up just about anything before I would give up my high speed cable and my Tivo and my laptop of course. I got my first laptop last year and I don't know how I lived before I could sit on the couch and surf (have wireless router).... I used to have to sit at the desk with the desktop.... imagine that lol.

P.S. I can't believe that Hobbs posts as much as she does with dial-up!! Hobbs, you must have the patience of a saint!

Hobbs didn't post anything to this thread but when I clicked on the results of the poll to see who was the "1" person who had dial-up it said hobbs. I'd go crazy if I had to go back to dial-up...........

Chrona

TBH, I wouldn't be able to do anything like that. Jumping off a roof would be almost as bad, since I used to cliff jump alot, and the first couple of times, you just get that "death is imminent" feeling that just feels terrible.

I'll have to take your word for it on the "death is imminent" feeling but I just know that I couldn't disembowel myself.... maybe I would just have to suffer through with dial-up.... I guess I could click on a post then read a chapter in a book.... then type a response then go wash some dishes..... then click on the next post then go throw the ball for the dog..... lol

It's basically ritual suicide.

Almost like using dial-up, exceupt with seppukku you'll know when you're connection is dead. Whereas dial-up your connection can be dead and you still stay "online" thinking you're still downloading a website's gifs. Dial-up is more like torture.

I remember when I first got on the internet with my dial-up and my 486DX2. Lets just say forums were not really an option. You post and then check again tomorrow to see if you got a response and pictures.... lol what pictures?

haha, that is true. A few years ago when i had dialup i belonged to a forum for my quad and i would only post about 3-5 times a sitting. It was just too much to bear.

Oooooh, 3.6?! Sweet! I have zero patience when it comes to the internet and sometimes just give up on downloads and loading that takes more than a few seconds. I'm spoiled!

also, it had better be fast for what I'm paying for it!

Oh no I'm not. The others I know of just didn't take the poll. I live in the Boonies and only broadband is offered here at $400 just to set up. Heck with that. I could get another fishtank for that and a canister filter. LOL

Cable connection will be offered in this area in 6 months they tell me. yeaaaa

It's funny really. I just paid nearly 2 grand for my computer, got upgraded graphics card, sound, etc, and here I sit with dialup. LOL

Some of us country bumpkins have to put up with what we get. My old computer would have to be "refreshed" about 10 times an hour but it isn't all that bad with this one. I obviously don't download music. LOL
