View Full Version : Confused after 5weeks (Fishelss cycle)

I've been doing the fishless cycle for about 5 weeks and I'm confused with my test results here on week 5.

Ammonia 4.0ppm
Nitrite 0.75ppm (between 1.0 and .50ppm colors)
Nitrate 2.5ppm (between 0 and 5.0ppm colors)
PH Level 7.4 (between 7.2 and 7.6)

These don't seem right to me.

-Nitrite that high when my levels of Ammonia at 4.0?

-Nitrate levels registering already with Ammonia and Nitrite at those levels?

*All tests were done with the API Freshwater Master Testing kit

Any info or help would be appreciated. I was hoping to have some fish in here within the next week or so according to the 6week estimate everyone gives to complete a fishless cycle.

Within 5 weeks it went from 5.0 to 4.0

Looks to me as something has slowed the process down. Have you done any cleaning or changed your filter pad? Your levels are fine, really, but for some reason, it's taken you a long time to get here. Add no more ammonia now that you have nitrites until it drops and then add only enough to bring it back to 2 until you have 0 nitrites.

Is your tank heated? Turn those temps up, too.

Have not done any cleaning and I have not changed anything.

I havent added ammonia since I started the tank because its been so high all this time.

Tank is heated and stays 76-78 degrees ALL the time.

Up it to 84 degrees and a airstone or two if you haven't already.

Five weeks and the ammonia is doing nothing? Is your water dechlorinated?

What is the pH of the water?

How much Ammonia did you add to start with? The API ammonia test kit is inaccurate over 4ppm so it could have easily been more than 5.
