View Full Version : Big Tanks...how do you reach the bottom???
So...like...I'm NOT going to get a 120 g tank (90 g would be as big as I go)...but I was looking at them and they are VERY deep...
...how the heck do you get to the bottom of them??? Even if I were to stand on a ladder, I don't think I could bend over enough to reach the bottom!
At any rate...I'm stumped...

I assume that you mean to clean the gravel or put stuff on the bottom (decorations, plants etc...).
There are a whole variety of gadgets and gizmos to make cleaning and re-arranging the bottom of a deep tank doable without a wetsuit. Just look around the LFS.

i never have that problem because i'm 6'6", but sasquatch hit it on the head. there's all sorts of extended "tools of the trade" on the market. for example, i have a battery operated vaccume that extends from 1-1/2' to about 3' long which i use for light cleaning. comes in very handy.
Yes...that's exactly what I meant! I know in my 25 g, I'll always repositioning something or other when I clean...
...so gadgets and gizmos eh? I'll start looking next time I have a chance...

Holy tall, batman! LOL I also thought for a second that your name should be sasquatch instead of jeff because of your height. hee hee!
As for reaching down in there, and if you didn't have any special extendable things, I would say do it during a water change so you can get in there while the water level is low (from on a step stool, I guess) and reach in without getting soaked. But then again, I just like to do things the hard way. I'm still using a 3 gallon bucket to do all of my water changes. back and forth, back and forth..... :)

Ya gotta love the Gadgets and gizmos, eh?:hmm3grin2orange:
...I just can't handle holding myself in awkward positions for any length of time...get too stiff and sore...so I'd have to have the gadgets...
I'd better stick to a 90 g or smaller!!! But it's good to know stuff is out there...

I've also read if you plant those tall tanks you need even higher wattage of light bulbs than recommened so enough light can reach the bottom. I know what you mean tho. I get soaked just doing my regular tanks.

no, but it looked a bit cramped, but it would be cool to see midgets live in a tank.

I usually do the rearranging in my 55 when the water is low after i do a water change. i am fairly tall (6'1") so its not too hard. i never really thought about the different problems someone is faced with when they are vertically challenged, but that is a good point...

At 5"1, I guess that would be me.

Since you have not purchased this tank yet and you feel it will be a problem, why not just buy a regular tank? Discus and angelfish like these taller tanks but since most fish swim back and forth and not up and down, stocking is even easier in the long tanks. Both the 55 and 75 only take up 48 inches of floor space.

Weird, judging by your pictures i would have thought you were like 5'5" at least. I guess there were no full body shots though.

For what it's worth...I'm 5'6"...
...I'm just not very 'bendy' anymore...if I ever was...
I think I'd better just stick with regular sized tanks...not the tall ones...

When you're as short as I am, distinguishing between " or ' doesn't really make that much of a difference!! I'd still have to use scuba gear to get to the bottom of that 120 gal. To reach the bottom of the 55 or 75 I'm gonna get next, I'm gonna have to have one of my taller friends hold me upside down by my ankles so I can place the plants and rocks!!!
Note to self....don't give them beer until after they've pulled me up from the bottom of the tank........

Hey quit pickin on the "short" people...We do things just fine down here...lol
Honestly I have two tanks (out of my 6 running) that are tall tanks and I usually put a chair in from of them and then stick my stepping stool on my chair and then try reaching in when the water level is low and I wont get soaked if I fell in...Which I have done before..lmao but that is a whole thread in it's own.
BTW I am only 5' 1 1/2" and yes I have to include the half inch...I need it!!!
Okay...now that REALLY rules out the bigger tanks...
I got myself an upright freezer because I couldn't clean out the old chest-type we had (practically was standing on my head scrubbing out the bottom)...
...only nice shallow tanks for me...
