Hi all,
The Tiger Barbs that I saw this past weekend were teeny tiny....about 1/2-inch long, including the fins (they were so small and adorable that they were about as tiny as a dime). I was at Petsmart today and just took a quick look-see in their aquarium section and saw BIG Tiger Barbs....almost 2-inches long. My question: Were the teeny tiny guys baby barbs that will grow larger? Or are there specifically-sized breeds, as in Small Tiger Barbs, Medium Tiger Barbs, and like the ones I saw today, Giant Honkin' Daddy Tiger Barbs?
Just wonderin'!

Like Ed said, they will get larger. Barbs are wonderful fish to watch, and will grow, but they do take time. I've seen some large barbs before too.

Ya they will get big. Sometimes I wish they would stay small, They would look amazing if you had a bunch of tiny tiger barbs in a tank.

They sure would. Don't some barbs in the wild get up to 3ft?

That's kind of what I was hoping for...a school of tiny tiger barbs and no other fish. Oh well...so much for that thought. The little tiny baby guys are really cute nonetheless.
A funny afterthought though...
I've seen plenty teeny weeny tiger barbs, but I cant' recall ever seeing teeny tiny Green Tiger Barbs. The smallest of those I've ever seen are the ones that are 3/4-inch, and of course the larger ones.

Not tiger barbs.

You could get them just to try out fishkeeping. In your 5 gallon tank, they won't grow that fast (although they won't be that happy either), and in a few months, if you decide to really get into the hobby, you could get a bigger (like 20-30 gallon) tank.

Ill give you some advice if you are going to get a bigger tank. Get a the biggest tank that you will ever want, otherwise, you will end up stair stepping up on sizes and you will have more tanks that you know what to do with, besides the fact that tanks dont come cheap.

still, that's some pretty darn big barbs! LOL I guess 16 inches is if they're in a humongo tank and they were pretty old.
I can't imagine feeding a school of six 16 inch fish!
