View Full Version : How much filtration should I run?

I have a 10g at my work that is lightly planted (1 anubia, 2 swords). Right now, the tank is only stocked with a pair of peppered corys, and I dwarf gourami. I will probably add a small group of tetras this week.

I am currently running an AC30 on the tank. I also have an AC20 laying around. Would it be a good idea to run that filter as well, or should I just leave the setup the way it is?

If for no other reason, I was considering running the extra filter just as a backup. Since this tank is at work, it goes unsupervised every weekend.

Thanks for any comments, suggestions!

I think the AC30 is more than enough...

Sounds like plenty to me too.

I have AC30's on both my 10gals, and they do more than enough filtration.

Its more than enough filtration. I love the idea of running two filters due to it being unmanned during the weekends...but honestly, i would bring the tank home for that reason. I understand it can help get rid of stress at work but the stress of my worrying about what might be going on in the tank over the weekend wouldnt be worth it. Basically any problem can kill fish if you give it a weekend to work

I wish I could take the tank home, but my wife has me on a 1 tank limit, lol. So the tank has to stay at work.

Thanks for all the input!

I will stick with the AC30.

Contrary to popular opinion, in a planted tank too much filtration is not a good idea.

Biological filtration competes for the same nutrients that plants do. In a fully planted tank there is hardly a need for biological filtration at all. Since you only have a few plants a bit of biological media is good, but over doing it will just led to nutrient deficiencies.

So I agree with above, you have plenty as is.
