Brackish Water Tank

I was thinking of doing a Brackishwater tank. Having done no tanks with Salt I have a few questions.


How much salt do you put in the tank?

If you treat the tank like a Feshwater tank, does that mean you can use all freshwater plants?

What size tank do you recomand for the first time no exsperienced person?

Besides Mollys what fish do you recomand for the beginner?

Is there anything else I should know?

How much salt do you put in the tank?
You need to by a hygrometer. It measure the Specific Gravity in your water.

If you treat the tank like a Freshwater tank, does that mean you can use all freshwater plants?

Most plants can survive brackish conditions. You can use:
Algae Balls
Banana plant
Cryptocoryne ciliata
Dwarf hairgrass
Glosso
Anacharis
common milfoil
Hornwort
Moneywort
Microsword
Java Fern
Java Moss


What size tank do you recommend for the first time no experienced person?

I would start with a 20-30g. 10g is a bit small.

Besides Mollys what fish do you recommend for the beginner?

I would not recommend Brackish to anyone with no fish experience.
If you have more experience, Dwarf Puffers are neat. There are also some gobies that are cool.

Is there anything else I should know?

Brackish tanks cost more to run then fresh water. To do it right you need to buy instant ocean (or similar brand). For true brackish, you can't just use aquarium salt.

I should of said I have no Brackish tank Experience. I have had cold water Goldfish and many Tropical fish and Invertebrates .

You said a true Brackish tank. What does it take to do a "true" Brackish tank? Also Is it harder to do a Brackish water tank then a saltwater tank? I never realy thought about ever going saltwater.

Then it would depend on if you wanted a community tank, or a species tank.

Green Spotted Puffers are best kept on their own. They tend to take bites out of other fish.
Gobies need to be on their own too, as far as I know.
I never kept Mollies in Brackish, I just keep them in a fresh water tank.

figure 8 puffers, and archer fish are cool. Archers shoot water out of their mouths to knock insects off plants. Ive seen brackish eels that are easy 2 keep too.

mollies are fine in brackish, Ive had mollies in fresh, brack, and salt

That helped me out. I forgot Glass fish are Brackish Water and very preaty. I was thinking 20 or 29Gallon or in between Brackish tank.

The figure 8 puffer is actually a Fresh water Puffer... Many people make the mistake but it is actually a FW. You can keep him in BW but i don't think he likes full BW. My Figure 8 puffer lives in a kind of mix between FW and BW.
I let him get used to the water and added every time some more salt. But he doesn't live in a full BW aquarium..
