I was researching a bit, and i noticed a food line called Solid Gold Wolf King large breed adult dog food.. Im considering switching my lab over to this, but was wondering if anyone had any insight on this particular brand? And what would be a good cat food as well?
Solid Gold is an interesting company. We have an allergic retriever and we switched him to it from Iams and had good results.
When the company first came out with their product, I believe it was very good quality. As they expanded, they seemed to have some production/quality problems, and our very finicky pet food store stopped carrying their products.
At that point we switched to California Naturals (must be a good 8 years now) and have stayed with it. Now, as luck would have it, I have another dog with allergies...she's on it too. And to keep life simple, so's the 3rd (no allergies, *knockonwood*).
However, I then heard Solid Gold cleaned up their act, and have heard good things about their product again.
So, if you'd like to try it, I'd say go ahead!
...sorry...not so good with cat foods...ours eat no-name wet and Purina dry...I've had no health issues (again *knockonwood*) on what some might consider an 'inferior' diet.

A friend of mine feeds her boxers solid gold, along with a crazy mix of raw foods she blends up and makes herself. She swears it's the best packaged food she's ever fed her dogs.

Im sold on Royal Canin :) My older cat used to eat Iams until she developed feline diabetes probably due to is less than expected quality and high carb load. She has thus been switched to just a little bit of Royal Canin dry catfood mostly because if we dont give her *some* dry food she has constant runs...the Royal Canin Active Mature 28 catfood is wonderful for cats over 10...Ive seen drastic improvement. She also gets very select flavors of Fancy Feast canned catfood because suprisingly it has some of the lowest levels of carbs and highest levels of protein out there and doesnt contain gluten.
My dog eats the Royal Canin Maxi German Shepard formula as well as a bit of raw meat.

The term "best" is really all a matter of opinion, after using Royal Canin I doubt Ill use anything else...I do love the breed specific forumals and more targeted to your animals needs random formulas. hmmm, Id consult my vet for the receding hairline thing...but IME it could be a problem with gluten which alot of animals are allergic to and develope worlds of health problems from. My parents old border collie had an allergy to wheat gluten which gave her worlds of skin problems until the vet figured out what was causing it, they got her some kind of Rx food and she was better but still had some issues.

We use Royal Canin too, the cats love it and their poo doesn't smell anymore. On whiskas or any other cheap brand their poo is disgusting and runny, but not with RC.

What do you guys think of eagle pack? its reasonably priced and seems better than most of the "premium brands" which are crap i know. I was considering switching to it.

royal canin, solid gold, eagle pack, blue buffalo, taste of the wild, life's abundance, innova and innova evo, chicken soup for the pet lover's soul, canidae, before grain, back to basics, california natural, fromm, halo, karma organics, merrick, natural balance, newman's own organics, orijen, timberwolf, VeRUS, wellness, whysong are all really good foods. any of these would be recommended by many people. their is no one "best" food, different dogs/cats do best on different foods.

I feed my dog Nutrience Supreme!
Its a little pricey but it has no preservatives and my og loves the stuff.
IAMS is CRAP!Not the food it used to be!

As for the cats i have two indoor and the get a bowl of friskies indoor delights in the morning, and then in the evening they get a can of friskies wet, The wet food can be bought in a case of 24 for around 10 bucks and they love it. no probs at all. and my 2 dogs are pups 7 months old so they get purina puppy chow so can't help ya with the dog food. although the dogs really like the cat food... it has been an on going battle. i don't recomend friskies for the dogs it would get expensive

IMO, if you are not going to feed raw, EVO is the best. I feed both my cats and dog this. My dog WAS on raw, but it is not convenient for us right now what with not having a chest freezer, and the only economical way to do raw is to buy in bulk. Evo has done him pretty good, best I've seen him on a dog food. My cats are great on EVO, and many people wonder why THEIR cat doesn't have such nice fur. :ssmile: Too bad I am just not sold on Carnivores needing veggies, or EVO would be perfecT! :hmm3grin2orange:
Edit: orijen seems like a great food, but a few years ago you couldn't really find it in the states. Is it more available now?

I've only heard to avoid dog food that contains ethoxyquin......a cancer causing agent.
Here's an interesting link about how dog foods are processed.
