Info about Dragon Goby

Hi all, we went to the LFS yesterday to get a few things and while going around the various tanks my girlfriend fell in love with one of the fish.

It's a Dragon Goby, Gobioides broussonetti, and it's one real cool looking fish.

We were wondering if anyone has any experience with this fish. We read up on it a little and though we didn't buy, we are seriously considering it for a future expansion project.

I saw some of those in a walmart. They had 10 t0 20 of them in a 10g tank it was horrible.

I've been fascinated with these fish ever since I've seen them in a tank at walmart. They look like mini sea monsters. I've read conflicting opinions about thier hardiness and compatability. I'm inclined to think that they are not very hardy fish. Your main concern will probably be ensuring that they are well fed. I'm curious to know what kind of water you will be using in the tank and what kind of fish you plan to coexist with it.

Personally, I'm scared to death of them. I'm super afraid of snakes, and to me, it looks too much like a snake (basically all eels and long slender bodied fish freak me out).

I should keep one just to help me get over my fear, but I would totally freak if it actually swam near my hand in the tank. LOL

I had one for a few months. I was really happy because after all the time he spent in the tank, he finally became comfortable enough to eat in the open. One day I saw him dead. There was a big chunk of him missing (eww!) I guess he swam to fast into a sharp rock

Are they a brackish water species?

Yes, but they can adapt to fully freshwater or fully marine, as long as the change is made very slowly

Well, thanks for all the replies. We'll probably ask the same question again in a year when we actually get a tank and decide to get one, but until them ...

Our (her) plans were a 55g long tank (minimum), planted with small sized substrate with driftwood hidey holes. It'll probably be a brackish water tank with tetras and maybe guppies and some small bottom feeders.

Guppies and Tetras aren't brackish.
