View Full Version : Looking for a Top and Bottom Feeder/s Suggestions/Recommendations?

01-23-2009, 02:37 AM

I am new to this hobby and am hoping to get some suggestions or recommendations for both a top and bottom feeder/s, as the fish I currently have seem to prefer only the middle area of my aquarium?

Currently I have in my aquarium:
5 Red Eyed Tetras
5 Gold Barbs
2 Black Skirt Tetras

How big is the tank? It would really help us figure out some great fish for your tank that won't outgrow it.

Hatchets and danios like the top. Cories and smaller loaches would be good for the bottom.

Welcome to the forum!

How long has the tank been set up?

IF you have the room (really do need to know the size of the tank, and what you have for filtration), corys make awesome bottom fish, if you can get at least 6 of them..

Do you have live or fake plants?

Algae problems?

Thanks for the advice everybody!

The tank is 45 gallons and has been set-up for about 2 months.

I have plastic plants but plan on trying to get some live plants instead.

Algae is minimal I would say, just a bit growing on the plants and other decor.

well cories are a great bottom dweller. their antics in a group are very cute. They like to be in groups of 6 or more but with the size of your tank you could probably get away with 8-10. there are many species to choose from so take a look to see what is in your area, i would suggest sticking with just one species though.

If cories aren't your thing you could also go with a group of loaches. Some of the ones that like company and stay small are the kuhli loach, the yoyo loach, zebra loach, and dwarf chained loach. there are several other bottom dwellers but the loaches/cories would be the best for activity and compatiblity.

As for top dwelling fish you could look into marble hatchetfish and danios and suggested. I've also hear that pencilfish like to hang out on the top as well.

What Wolf Eyes said..

8-10 corys (pandas, adoplhi, and schwartzi corys are my top favs).

Or 6 corys, 1 bristlenose pleco.

I say a dozen pygmy corys for bottom dwellers and a trio(1m,2f) of wrestling halfbeaks for the top of the tank.
