:help: I can't make up my mind! I have to deside between fancy goldfish or peacocks before I can set up my tank. :goldfish: :fish: LOL
What do you think the ups and downs are to each? I like them both for different reasons...and I just can't get ahold of that "ONE" thing that will help me deside!! So, if you have any insight on which way to go or "NOT" go.... PLEASE let me know!! LOL Thanks!! :hmm3grin2orange:

What size is your tank? Peacocks are only supposed to grow to 5 inches, goldfish get much much much larger.

With cichlids, you can try raising their babies. It looks like fun as long as you have a store that will take them.

What size tank?

I would look around at all the LFSs and see what which one it seems like you would have more/better options for.

I had peacocks in my 150 and now have goldfish in there. The goldfish are more peaceful. Setting up for goldfish is easier, lots of plants. Finding enough nice rock for a peacock setup without spending a lot can be challenging. I like the plants and they do very well with my goldfish (but I didn't try any with the peacocks). I see nice peacocks every once in a while that can be tempting, but I like the goldfish better. There is also the possibility for other tankmates with goldfish. I have platies, guppies, danios, ottos, and a dojo loach in with my goldfish. And ideal water conditions for goldfish don't require special buffers (unless your water is really acidic) or salt. There are articles on both in my blog and in appropriate sections on this forum. There are also pics of each in my photobucket page.

I would go with goldfish, but with goldfish, you will need better filtration because they are poo machines

I vote for peacocks. Just because of how dirty goldfish are... :)

Naturestee.... Its a 150gal tank. Also, if I went with peacocks...it would be an ALL MALE tank. Thanks!

Fishguy.... Your right about the rocks!! I have looked EVERYWHERE online and they are certainly not cheap when you have to have soooo many of them! I just love how beautiful the peacocks are...but I think you may have pulled me over a bit more to the Fancy goldfish side! LOL I love the FG's too! They are quite funny to watch and they are beautiful also! So, I have a ? then, can the funny little celestial-eye goldfish live in the tank with the moores, orandas, ryukin and shubunkin? Oh and can the red bubble eye, also?
I know they shouldn't be mixed with comets...but what about the others I listed? I ask, because those are the two funny looking ones that my older sons want to have! LOL Thanks! Oh, and I took your advice you gave me on another post....and I bought me a Fluval FX5. I just have to figure out what other filter I should invest in along with it!! Thanks again!!

Ty and Sam....... I agree with you both....for both reasons! This is why it has been soooo hard to deside!! LOL

I just have the FX5 on my 150. I do have a powerhead and a lot of bubbles to help with flow though. The Azoo air pumps are awesome, tons of air and very affordable. I have the largest, 9500, and it runs a 2' bubble wand and 8" of micro bubblers, all at the bottom of the tank.

The shubunkin is a long-bodied goldfish, like a comet.

I have ranchus, telescopes, a moor, orandas, celestial eyes, and a bubble eye. As long as they are all the fancy round-bodied types they should be fine. Have you seen the video of my tank? It is in the goldfish album on my photobucket page.

I have longbodies and fancies in the same tank, and have never had any problems at all. they all get along fine, but that might be sience they have been together from a very early age.

It depends on the individuals. It is safer to not mix. The long bodieds are too prone to being more active (outcompete for food or simply stress out the rounds) and some can be aggressive (aggressive enough to eat the wen off of orandas, lionheads, ranchus, etc.).

Ty....interesting! It goes against all that I have heard....but I am glad it is working out for your tank! :ssmile: You must have a nice peaceful bunch! LOL

Fishguy.... ok...good to know! So, I should be fine to just mimic what you have done then? LOL I seen your tank before...but I am going to go look again! Your tank is long, where as my 150 is not as long. Its the 150gal at Petsmart with the stand....I am sure you probably seen it! LOL

I was going to ask earlier which 150 it is. That is quite a tank, good luck reaching the bottom, I can barely reach the bottom in the back and even then I am up to my armpit in water (usually do adjustments during water changes when the water is low). That shape is much better for slower fancy goldfish, not long-bodieds or peacocks. The peacocks would do better with length, easier to do the rockscape and establish different territories.

Planted is ideal, but you will need some good lighting to reach the bottom, what is it 30" tall? The good news is that isn't much deeper than mine and with an extra 6" of width you can get even more light. I did it nice and cheap and got 4' double fluorescent shop lights at home depot. I use hardware store 6500K bulbs. If you have the money and want to T5HO are arguably the best lighting out right now. Ebay has some deals.

If I remember that tank is 48"x24"x30".

Yes, if you copy what I did I think it will work out very well. I am very flattered that you would look at my tank that way. That was actually my intention. I have gotten sick of all these advanced goldfish keepers keeping their goldfish in bare hospital room tanks with at best a couple potted plants. They love the sand. They love the plants. They are fish, not decorations. I wanted people to look at that tank and think 'wow, that is how goldfish should be setup'.

Let me know any other questions you get.

Fishguy.... hmmmm, ya know...I am not sure, but I thought the guy gave me deminsions of 50*26 and a quarter...by ???? LOL I just remember writing them down somewhere before I took the ride to get the tank! I had to make sure it would fit! I remember him saying something like.....its 61' tall with the stand...and LOL....thats how tall I am!! LOL Guess I will be using an "A" frame ladder or something better!! LOL
Do you think if I used silk plants for awhile, til I get familiar with things....it would be ok? Also....is there anyway I can cycle the tank faster then a month or so??? Should I use fish or should I do a fishless? .....if fishless....is there a product out there that can help it along? Thanks for your input....your a HUGE help!!:22:

In tanks this size it is actually kind of easy to bypass the problematic cycle. Since it is so big any waste will be very diluted. With normal water changes the bacteria slowly acclimate to the bioload, as the bioload grows the bacteria slowly do too. I remember when I first got my 100 a long time ago I added two oscars and two pacus (do not repeat) and never had any issues. It just works differently. So I would say get one or two small ones, get them going, monitor the parameters to make sure nothing goes wrong, and stock slowly.

Get plants in asap but if you want to wait a little that is fine. No benefit of rushing it and they just die.

Let us know the dimensions when you can. Just the tank.

Ok....sounds good! Thanks soooo much for all the good info! I have a BIG double family wedding to go to the end of this month ( In NY) and I live in DE...( to far to travel to keep daily tabs on a tank!) so I guess I will get my jump start after I get back! I will check those dimensions and get back to ya! Thanks alot!! :22:

[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

I eventually want to move the stuff feom my 46 tot my 75, then move the goldfish to a 150 tank in the next two or three years once they grow some more.

They grow fast. My huge ranchu was only about a year and a half old.

Ty.... Nice tank!! I don't know...the LFS has some pretty large ones here....wonder if I should buy em big...or buy em small???? LOL

Rue.... I love goldfish too! Its all I ever really owned. I did have have sharks and some others prior to goldfish...but fancy goldfish are just to funny! :hmm3grin2orange: How can you not like them? LOL Oh, and the are great entertainment for kids....they can't get enough! LOL

I get all of mine small for a few reasons; they cost much less, they are much more fun to watch grow, and they will be about 6 or 7 times their original size within a year.

Ty..... true! LOL I think I might mix it up! LOL Some of all sizes.

Ty

that is how my tank is, I am up to six right now, but I started with two, and started adding more, so there are all sizes in my tank.

the only problem with that is finding a good sized food that they can all eat. Now all of mine are able to eat small pond pellets.
