In another thread Nikipate commented how she liked hearing slang from various countries, I also like to find out what variouse slang means, so instead of throwing that thread off topic, I thought I would start a thread about slang.

I will kick it off with one of the more outragous ones from Australia.

"I'm dryer than a dead dingo's donger"

Simply means "I am very thirsty"

Well around here there is ALOT of slang...

One of the things that come to mind is, growing up my Grandpa used to tell us kids to "get outta the picture"...which means get out of the way of the TV...lol

another one I thought of is when kids say something is "Da Bomb" it means that whatever they were reffurring to was really Cool, Awsome, basically they liked it ALOT...lol another one I just learned is Phat...I always thought it meant a girl was (Phat) Pretty, Hot, And, Tempting..lol but nope it means the same as "Da Bomb"

Aparently in the 50's rhyming slang was very big over here, a few that come to mind are:

Trouble and strife, = Wife
Dead horse = Tomato sauce
Frog and toad = road
Billy lid = Kid
Oxford scholar = Dollar
Captan Cook = Look

I heard this one a few times back home in Louisiana:

"She's finer than a frog's hair split four ways!"

They would get weird looks for saying that one.

It's really pretty hard to think of the words you use as slang. We are so use to using them that they don't seem to even be slang anymore.
Example:

Crock = Batch of lies
Schooled = Being beaten badly at anything
Throw Down = fight
Crotch Rocket = Sport bike motorcycle
Cake = easy
Blast = very fun
Rice Burner = Jap. Car (usually with stupid mods)
Red neck = Country person

Let me use these in a short story to show their meaning.

So I was riding around on my crotch rocket the other day when a red neck in a rice burner pulled up next to me and wanted to throw down. Schooling him was pure cake. I'd say I had a blast but this whole story is one big crock.

Well put together floored LOL

If someone had said that to me, I would have thought put down, in that senence would have meant race.

I get made fun of because I use the British names for things, even though I live in Canada. My Mom is from England so it was what I grew up with. Here's some of them.

Lory - Truck
Wellies - Rubber Boots
Boot - Trunk (on a car)
Pong - Bad smell
Jumper - Sweater

I'm really behind reading posts here and I just ran across this one!! Thanks Crackatinny for starting this one... I love your first one LOL. I'm from the South and we have a lot but like F1oored said it's kind of hard to think of them because we use them so much...

I do remember someone on a forum from Puerto Rico was stumped by someone saying they had to "get their ducks in a row" meaning they had to get everything in order.

My grandparents used to say "grinnin' like a donkey eatin' briars" when you were "grinning from ear to ear".

My sister in law says "that dog don't hunt in my woods" meaning she doesn't allow something to happen in her house.

Then there's "feeling lower than a frog's belly" when you are kind of depressed.

That's all I can think of right now... oh, and I love Hobbs' too.... popcorn fart!! LOL

I always say somthing like "Now that Chrona sure is a different duck"
Meaning he is weird.
Or "Chrona couldnt tell his butt from a hole in the ground"
Meaning chrona is not very smart
Or my favorite (also from the move "Major Payne") "Ill be on you like white, on rice, in a glass of milk, on a paper plate, in a snowstorm"
Meaning ill be watching you.

One of my friends who is older than I am grew up in Kansas. These aren't slangs, per se, but he would come up with the funniest sayings that always made me laugh.

"She's uglier than five miles of mud fence".

"You're so skinny you'd have to run around in the shower to get wet".

"He's dumber than a box of rocks".

"I'm so hungry I could eat the south end of a chicken going north".

"It's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick".

Although my boyfriend is fluent in english, he is originally from South America, and sometimes North American proverbs get lost in translation. There's an american saying that goes, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush", meaning whatever is in your possession is worth more than several that you dont' own. This was his translation of that saying:

"A bird in your pocket is worth two flying free".

Same meaning, but not the same proverb! He recites other proverbs that exist in spanish but we don't have in english. He will recite the spanish saying, but translated into english, thinking that the saying is reciprocal (it never is).

You just made me laugh with your boyfriend's proverb. lol. Although he may not be the best with proverbs im sure you love it when he whispers spanish into your ear! lol
