hi,
i was in the aquarium today and i noticed these guys for sale for $20 bucks each and they look like a must have being so unique and all, i have been doing some reserach and have read they have been known to eat other small aquarium fiah - i am definetly going to get some neon tetras and was wonderign if anyone else have ever had a problem with them and if it is a wise decision to get one with these fish in the tank..
thanks, Paul

What size tank do you have? What other fish do you have?
Here is some more info on them.[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

Hi there,

Would be a very interesting fish to keep if you have a tank big enough and can meet its requirements, but I have a feeling that neons may become a snack for a knife fish.

Someone more experienced may be able to advise you soon though.

There are conflicting reports on them eating small fish but if it were
me I definitely wouldn't put a GK with neons, just to much of a temptation.

Since they get up to 20 inches, I would squash that idea.

it's a 150 ltr tank, i havnt got any fish in it yet - im just letting the plants establish.. if there is a chance he will eat neons and other small fish i think i will give it a miss, thanks

can anyone recommend some fish i should get for my tank - i am definetly going to get neons, angelfish, and rosy barbs - so anything thats not too big, gets along, looks great or unique - cheers, Paul

I would recommend first to cycle your tank. That way you won't loose any to death.

What makes for a nice looking tanks is a couple large schools of fish rather than a whole bunch of different species. The neons would look great with a whole bunch of runny nose tetra's. Even cardinals, neons and runny nose and perhaps a school of corys for the bottom level and some rasbora's for your top level.

i raised one from juvenile to fullgrown and he never touched my tetras or anything. he was around neons even and left them alone

fullgrown they do need 220g, preferably more

ok thanks mate, my tank was sitting at
ammonia: 0
nitrate: 0
nitrite: 0
ph: 8.0

and that was when i had african cichlids in there with the same filter (aquaone canister) - so once i sold the cichlids i simply did a half water change and didnt add any PH up chemical in - so it is now naturally sitting at...
ammonia: 0
nitrate: 0
nitrite: 0
ph: 7.0
and is using the same bacteria that still in the filter from when i had the cichlids...Thats ok isnt it?
cheers, Paul

depending on how long it's been since you got rid of the cichlids and if there has been no ammonia source since then, you may need to start a new cycle in your tank.

it's been like a week lol - is that a good thing or a bad thing, and what do u mean by ammonia source?

you'll most likely need to recycle your tank. you should read up on them in the e-book to the left. you need a source of ammonia (fish or ammonia) to keep the cycle going. right now if you have an empty tank then the cycle has most likely reset.

Agreed, recycle your tank but the BGK will outgrow that tank.

yer ok, no worries, i do have two fish still in there and they are just fish i know can live with cichlids and tropical fish too, they are two clown loaches but only about 4cm each so im guessing they would not produce enough waste to keep the cycle going???..
thanks once again, i will re-cycle it this weekend if Necessary

My bgk has never bothered any of my neons, but that might have something to do with me introducing the neons before introducing the bgk. As long as you introduce the neons first, you should be completely fine, and the bgk will leave all of your fish that you want to get alone. The only flaw I can see at the moment in your plan is your tank size. You might want to get a bigger tank if you want a bgk...
