I have a 10 gal cycled tank with 3 danios a pleco and a pygmy algae eater (fox). I just added 4 tiger barbs. Next month can I add more fish if not that is fine, but if I can what would you suggest?:22:

Do you know which type of plec you have? Some plecs can get huge and will out grow that 10 gallon in a few months. :ssmile:

Pretty much ALL plecs I have looked at will outgrow a 10 gallon pretty quick. Sounds like the tank is already full, or at least it soon will be once the current stock grow a bit.

Yes, it's full! Tiger Barbs are probably not a good choice for a 10 gal tank. The Pleco will have to go....Time for a bigger tank!!!:hmm3grin2orange:

The pleco is a pygmy, set to top off at 3-4". I was told that plecos do fine with tigers. IS that thrue? And what about capacity. I think I have the rpoper ccapacity if you go by sq inch of water surface area. Why do tigers need a larger tank?

Tigers are active and need a lot of swimming room. I think the minimum tank size would be 20gal. and a 24inch length...I've never heard of a Pygmy Pleco...I'd love to see a picture!

You may have the right size tank for now. But these fish will grow. And as already been said Tiger barbs are very active fish and need room to swim.
If you are refering to 1" of fish per gallon of water. It is not set in stone. It all depends on the fish you are keeping.
If you were keeping 10 1" fish in that tank that won't get any bigger that would work. But the fish you have that isn' the case. :ssmile:
Also it sounds like you have a flying fox which will get too big for your 10 gallon.

Actually I checked it on Wikipedia. I have an algae eater genus Gyrinocheilus) but it has not gained much in size in more than a year inthe tank. Sounds like I don't want it any bigger.
HMNM, this sound like some big problems.
The reason your Gyrinocheilus has not grown bigger is because it has been stunted. So this poor fish will not grow any more in the tank he is in. And IMO he wont live any were near as long as he would if kept in a 50 gallon tank.
Now this problem can be solved by up grading tank to a 50 gallon long.
As for the Plecos IMO all of them are way to big for a 10 gallon even when babies.
Even if the rule of inch per gallon is correct, it has many flaws, and only works on a few types of fish. The reason not all fish can be classified the same way. Every fish has a different temperament and requirements.
The real thing is to take into account the amount of activity the fish get up to. For instance Rainbow fish from the lakes of Papua New Guinea swim the whole length of the lake, which means they fish need a long tank, so you are best suited to get a tank which is long, like a 100 5 ft long tank.
While Neon Tetras school in large school in the Amazon. So a tall long-ish tank of say 30 gallons is great, in a school of 10++.
IMO I would return the Pleco. Also depending on what type you have you may have the common type which can grow up to 1 1/2 to 2 ft long.
And require large tanks.
Now with the fish that can stay in the 10 gallon IMO is none. Danios like room to move like the Tiger Barbs. So if you can I would up grade to say a 20 gallon or 30 gallon long for these fish so they can live in proper size schools.
Hope this helps.

Well, disaster overtook one of my barb tanks. It started when one barb died. I figured that it was shock, then in rapid succession two more died, one with white fuzzy spots all over it. The two plecs I had started acting odd, swimming in the front corners of the tank. That was 2-3 days ago. I checked the tank last night and every single fish except for a tiny SAE died.
What happened? I assume the white dots were ich, but does this disease affect corys and pleecos too? Can it kill a whole tank in a matter of days? I have to get some tester kits but - help!
