well i went out last night about finally bought some fish to add to my newly cycled 55. i got 2 small clown plecos and 1 small upside down cat. i've read conflicting things about the plecos, some say they are good algae eaters and some say they are not. i really wanted some small bristle nose plecos but i couldn't find any small ones. my tank is starting to get some spotty areas of algae on the sides so can anyone say weather or not the plecos will help take care of it? any other suggestions for keeping these new guys?

feed veggies and algae wafers. you have to supplement their diet. they need more than just algae in their diet

Congratulations! The Plecos will eat a little of the algae (mine does) but most likely will not rid you of the problem. As Jeff said make sure you vary their diet as well. They cant survive solely off the wasted food and algae in your tank.

a-firm-a-tive! i will have to also get some very subtle night lighting so i can watch them at night. i could not find one of the plecos this morning, it was hidden very well. i'll also have to add some driftwood in soon too to help out with the environment for them but i do have some fairly large rocks built up in there so they can hide.

I've heard that the brown algea will be eaten but green spotted will be untouched as it's unpalatable to them... correct me if i'm wrong anyone!

I don't know if featherfins clean the glass or not. I've seen them once or twice climbing up the glass but not often unless they do it at night.
