I want to put some kind of freshwater clam/mussel into my tank. What would you suggest?

I am thinking of zebra mussels, as they are so prolific, however, they are also very invasive. Any idea on where to get some?

Properly maintained aquariums are way too clean for filter feeders like that to live. Something invasive is presumably hardier and may have a chance, but I don't think they sell them anywhere (they are probably illegal since they are invasive).

Oh god zebra mussels *puke*

No seriously, I live in a city on Lake Michigan and I studied/worked in environmental science. They are EVIL.

That, and like Fishguy said they won't do well in an aquarium. They'd need to be fed similar to the saltwater filter feeders. And if they die you might not notice till the ammonia spike...

they are filter feeders so they need dirty water to thrive in, i usually recommend them for heavily planted tanks with no filter
