It is also possible to tell by the fins in some individualls but that are far less reliable. The easiest/safest way in young fish is through tubing.

Actually it's called venting, males have same-size anal and genital openings, females have a larger genital opening. (When netted and turned upside-down.)

There is some variation in vent size between different species, but the general priciple applies. Eggs are larger than sperm, and require a larger opening to pass through.
