One of our LFS has a koi pond...I was there a couple days ago and inspite of the freaky cold weather the larger ones were still moving about. I'm thinking I'd like to move my comet out of a tank and into their pond.

Since my comet has been in 78 degree water for the past 18 months, would it be better to wait until spring summer for the change? As much as I like it I'd rather focus more on cories and tetras. I'm getting a 20 long (I was going to go with a 29 but space works out better to have a longer but shorter tank) so space won't be an issue for a while..

I would. That is a huge temp shock.

Agree with Hobbs, I'd wait for warmer weather. Goldfish are tough but that would be a big shock

Not sure if you knew this, but the foot print for a 20 long and 29 are exactly the same. I'm currently using the stand and Eclipse hood from my broken 29 on my new 20 long.
