I sent him this real quick since the reply thing was right there on the side of the page
Hey bud, i just wanted to let you know that the pacu actually needs a school of pacu and 500 gallons ideally. I know some of people who have mistakenly purchased these monsters and ended up actually donating them to a local aquarium. Just thought i'd let you know, good luck!

Jeez poor fish.
My LFS has a couple in a 500 gallon display tank to put people off getting them. It works most of the time too.

Good idea!!! lol
Not uncommon for those fish to end up in a local lake. I once saw a fancy finned goldfish over 4 lbs be taken from a local lake.

needs a 75-100 gallon tank, ya just to be able to turn around and swim about 2 inches one way or the other. Gorgeous fish, that's a real shame. Hopefully it finds a home with some friends and some room to swim.

A fish purchased for an aquarium should never end up in a lake. You should never release a fish into any water way.
I'm going to upset some people but ugh I think that's an ugly fish. Not that it should be mistreated so please dont' take me the wrong way. It needs a good home and friends. But ewwie he's ugly :14:

Gosh, he sure needs more than an extra 25 gallons. He's 400 gallons more.

My LFS has 2 Pacu somebody brought in...they have a 225G tank and they are some of the luckier Pacu sold because the tank is 30" wide and they will atleast be able to turn around and move a little. They really have no place in the hobby as very very few people can house them.

lol, everyone seems to think pacu are ugly
i actually think they look cool. they grow fast though, my largest one was a tiny little thing when i got him on october 07 and now hes a monstrous beast. the other one i have also grew fast. theyre getting their own indoor 650g pond though, once they outgrow that they will go to the mall here in their beyond huge tank

yeah, i wanted a 650g acrylic tank for them but then the thought hit i wouldnt be able to get it in or out of the basement. pond would be easy to disassemble
im considering maybe even giving them straight to the mall, i go there alot so i could always visit them and im sure they will let me feed him and everything. i think they still have other pacu there so they could be in a school with others

If no one has a tank large enough I'd fillet, marinate, and grill the beastie. Aside from being upsetting if the keeper is emotionally attached to the fish, it's certainly no worse a fate than keeping it so confined. I've seen a few similar-sized fish pass through the lfs, usually sold for $1 each just to get rid of them, and heard of at least one person who had bought a couple for dinner. Word was they tasted like fish food, so marinating seems like a good idea.

Yikes!!
My sisters ex bought a Pacu once, then we went to the aquarium and saw some in an exhibit... he took it straight back to Petco and made a huge deal about how they shouldn't be selling fish like that to unprepared people. I don't think they listened to his advice!

I absolutely HATE pacus. I always try to tell customers not to buy them, but the fact they "look like a pirahna" always gets them and I tell them how big they'll get and everything and they just don't care. Its ridiculous.

yeah, pacu are one fish that should have never touched the hobby
how i got my first pacu is it was in a petsmart in a 20g long, and he didnt have much room. i knew i could move him to a bigger tank whenever so i got him.
second one came when i was at a different petsmart, and they had about 2 dozen little pacu in one of their sale tanks, which are only like 10g. they all had fin rot and looked stressed. figured why not save one. the little scratched up pacu with fin rot now is healthy and the size of a small plate
