Well got my stand for my 65 gallon tank done next is on to shimming I have a piece of plywood that I'm putting under it for shimming purposes. Does anyone have any tips on shimming any input would be great on this as my carpentry skills are rather meek.
Here is the completed stand that a couple of friends helped me build.

The stand looks great. Im a fairly decent woodworker, but what is shimming?

shimming.. to make it level. The back is lower than the front so if you put shims or pieces of wood between the stand and the plywood it would be level. Im not too sure how to go about it though.

Buy a sheet of 1/4 inch styrafoam or polystyrene and lay it out on the bottom of the stand where the tank would sit. the tank virtually levels it self. It is still unlevel, try 1/2 inch. Hope it helped.

I thought the styrofoam which I have a 1/2 inch piece already fitted would just help even out the weight distribution across entire bottom of tank and not for leveling purposes.

Unless you have an uber dense styrafoam, it should auto level it self.

what about a kinda bad lean. I'm alittle confused if tank is on foam and weight is shifted to the back the foam towards the rear would compress more because of the weight and therefore compound the lean wouldnt it.

i would use wood lathe that you can purchase from any building supply store (home depot, lowes) it's purpose is to build up door and window openings in the framing for buildings. they usually come in 1/8-1/4" thicknesses. more durable than styrofoam because it's wood

Your stand looks real nice. Unusal grain in the wood.
If you feel your floor may be slightly uneven, put a piece of styrofaom between the stand and the tank.

thank you jeff. that is a good idea. Yes, I thought the wood was unusual too.. but I liked it for some reason. :)

sure. what kind of wood is that exactly? it looks like plywood that has been stained. is that correct? very different:thumb:

yeah, it is plywood but it has a finished side. it was stained with a chestnut color.

we would have liked to make it from oak or cherry but it would have been cheaper to buy an already made stand that way.

it definitely would. hard woods are super expensive. you pulled your stand off very nicely though
