I went to my LFS and bought 2 dozen feeder guppies so that I can begin my first attempts at breeding fish and found something interesting. I am just curious if anyone could ID this creature for me and let me know if it is something that I should be concerned about. Thanks guys.

I've seen those bugs in ponds, ditches, and sometimes even pools. They look like a man in a boat 'rowing'...forget what they are called, but they are a common pest anyhoo.

This was the best I could get and I took about 25 pics trying to get a good one, think I may need a better camera:) I just want to know if it is something I should go ahead and put in my tank of should I dispose of this thing?

Thats a pond bug we here call an "oarsman" (oars man) because it looks like a little boat wit oars.
It's a harmless water bug. If it was in the water at a fish store i would wonder what open outdoor pond they are getting their fish and/or water from.

I am just copying everyone else here, but I say get rid of too. Maybe you have a fish who might like to take a bite out of it?
It is harmless though, whatever way you look at it. Its not like there are any other ones he/ she can mate with there.

Find a pond somewhere to put it over here they are called Water Boatman.
Wikipedia agrees aswell :D [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
For me I would keep it out of the tank. And I agree with the rest. Oarsmen, is the name. I use to use them as bait in the fresh water dams in Aussy.

It's a backswimmer, Notonecta unifasciata. They bite like hell, so be careful removing it. Those feeder guppies must have been pond bred to pick up a backswimmer like that. Backswimmers are highly predatory, so dispose of it post haste.
