Do you think they can be kept with snakeskin barbs, harlequin rasboras, rainbowfish, ottos, kuhli loaches, dwarf loaches?

With a Calvus Cichlid? I would say none. That cichlid belongs with other cichlids from Lake Tanganyika.

This same question has been posted in the rainbow thread. Please do a bit of research on fish. You can Google many of these questions yourself or check the compatiblity charts.

Same questions in two threads have been merged together into one thread.

I guess I will just use apistos. What about my rainbowfish question?

How big is the tan going to be?

If it is around 50 gallons I would say Kutubus, Boiesman, or Dwarf Neon Rainbow fish.

It is a 55 gallon.

The you will be able to choose the fish from above list I provided. Just another question how many of each species of fish will you be adding in your list of fish?

8 of each except for the apistos. I might upgrade to a 65 gallon. You see I am just planning a tank.

IMO I would leave the tank with just the fish you have with out adding more fish. That would be my thoughts on it.

What do you mean?

What do you mean?

Well the Rainbows grow to a reasonable size. And a nice school is needed. So with all the other fish in the tank, to me I would think it will start getting crowed when they get older.

You would do best having more of each fish you have and less different species. Fish like several of their own kind. You should stick to either a cichlid tank or a community tank, as well, and not try to keep mixing your species.

Have you already purchased the fish listed in your first post or are they just fish you have been thinking of getting? If not, perhaps we can give you some idea's what would go well in your tank.
Please list what you do have and how many of each.

I do not have any of the fish at the moment.

For me IMO I would get the Rainbows and the Loaches, just for the tank.

Great then I totally agree with mac. If you have live plants, then some otto's, too, but if no plants you can rule those out.

Most rainbows grow to 4-5 inches and are very active swimmers. You get about 10-12 of those, and that's enough for that tank (with the loaches). If you want more, get the neon rainbows that only grow to about 2 1/2". You could have 15 of them and still have some Harlequin Rasboras if you wanted. What about your tetra's I saw in another thread? You could have a tetra, loach and rasbora tank, too.

This is how I will set up the tank. I will scatter large pieces of rock on the bottom. I will also put in one large piece of driftwood. I will put sand on the bottom. I will also add scattered java moss, java fern, and amazon swordplant.
