How would I be able to tell? The guy working at the lfs that day was the reef expert, I asked him about them and he was honest about not knowing much about cichlids.

I doubt it. I'm pretty sure these guys breed right in the tank at the lfs.

Great Parents! When I did the first water change after the fry were free swimming, both the male and the female went in a panic, dug a new pit and had all the babies in it buy the time I was finished... female hovering over them, and the male on guard at the edge of the pit.

It's not a HRP, it looks very similar though. look at the fin shape.
