ummmboona? sichlid?

Just thought i would shed some light for those who dont know how to pronouce some things.

Just in case somebody doesnt know how to pronounce them. If i hear one more person say sichlid, i might have an anurisum

You'd hate me then. I call them Chicklets. But only to be funny. I was standing in the lfs on day only to overhear a woman talking with the clerk about her fish. She was going on like this..
"I have lemon Tea-tras, neon Tea-tras, harlequin Tea-tras..."
The way she said it made me nearly pee myself laughing. She really punched the "Tea" part like she was certain that thats how you say it.

Good post. I called them chick-lids for awhile until I finally asked someone and was told SICK-LID. I got funny looks too. :)

Actually, one of the books I was reading said that it is a common misunderstanding to say um-boo-nuh for mbuna. Since it is a native word it should be pronounced the way the natives do, which is mboo-nuh. More like boo-nuh but with just a slight hint of that m at the beginning. I say it mboo-nuh and just start with my lips in the m form in order to get the right hint of the m in there.

I totally had it wrong and asked the at my LPS on last thursday to be exact...and the guy had no clue what I was saying until I pointed to the tank...LMAO:hmm3grin2orange: he said I was better off just pointing because I tore up the names of fish.. I always say Gourami wrong and he laughs.. Gore-ami...lol

I used to always say pleco wrong. I would say "pleck-o" instead of "plee-ko", so I just started calling them plecostomus. I figured I couldn't go wrong if I just said the whole thing since that was the only one I for sure knew how to say.
