I think my heater is on the fritz. Yesterday the temp spiked to....well I wont even put where it was.

So I took the hood off and turned the dial down a smidge even though the indicator light was unlit. Once the temp was back to normal (82ish) I put the hood back on and went about my day.

At dinner time I noticed it was freakin cold in there! About 75. I then turned the dial back up a smidge until the light came on. An hour later, it was right back up there. So I took the hood off, and left the heater set where it was.

This morning, the tank was cold, just above 70. So before I went to work, I left the hood door open and touched the heater dial till the light came on.

When I got home, it was about 84.

Seems no matter how little I turn it up or down, its either trying to make soup of my inmates or trying to freeze them for soup at a later date. :smad:

No fish are dead thank god! I'm sure they are upset though. The tetras are all huddled in the bushes. The shark-thing and pl*co are acting normal. Everyone came out to eat and the tetras had the usual game of "tag" as I call it.

Looks like I will have another night of "sleep an hour, wake up, check the tank, back to bed, repeat" Like I did when I first got them all in there.

Pet shop is not open today or I'd have just got another heater.

Now for a heater. I'm sure I will get a replacement free of charge as its quite new. However, I was pondering something a bit better. Any suggestions? I have about 60 bucks to spend. Might have a bit more if its REALLY worth it.

Yup! It sounds as if your heater has had better days.:11:

A normal tropical fish tank should be kept at about 76-78* not at 82*.

Hmm, right. I have read that. When any lower than that -everybody- hangs around the heater. 80 - 84 seems to make them swim around.....

omfg....does that mean they are swimming around trying to cool off?!?!

You might want to get a new heater...
