Hi,
I broke the recommended size per gallon already and I'm posting this to see if I can maybe push my luck a little bit more :)
I have a couple of goldfish (telescope, other one I'm not sure of) in a 10 gal tank and I'd like to add a couple of little ones for color, got recommendation for goldfish friendly company? I do water change every 2 weeks.

goldfish, contrary to all the rumors about them are going to get way too big for a 10 gallon tank. i would tell you to get a much bigger tank for them, give them to someone who can house them properly, or take them to a lfs and get smaller fish. something more suitable for a ten gallon. sorry to rain on your parade. this is nothing personal, just my opinion.--jeff

i wouldnt say so. Goldfish need like 20g each, so youre really pushing it already

Unfortunately, it's sad but true. They need way more room. I got my daughter a feeder goldfish for the 10g we have and had to take it back 6 months later. She was ok with it because they have a big pond in the store and the guy pretended to put in in for me. She is young enough that all orange fish look the same.

my feeder was a baby in july 2003 and by september '04 i had to sell it cause it outgrew my 33g and was growing at a rapid rate, and I sold him for a WHOPPIN 75$, and i paid 30c for him. When I sold him he was 8 inches

Tank is not big enough and water changes are not often enough.

If you get a 40g tank you can MAYBE get 1 more fish

If you want a colorful fish, or more, you could go with a sizable school of tetras. They are small, hardy, easy to care for, and VERY colorful.
You could probobly get 7 tetras and three corydoras

In my opinon (please no one take offense to this) The only things golfish are good at are, pooping, tearing up your tank decor, and catfish bait.:wink2:

Goldfish arent hard to take care of by any means. They just poop alot and get really big.

goldfish are cool, but you can't keep them in that tank for very long

I've seen some pretty goldfish but wouldn't buy one.

So all of that poop equals more ammonia and then youve got more work to do in the means of tank maintenence

I would never have goldfish again, unless I had a pond. Then I would probably get Koi.

Rotting food in the tank, fish waste and from their gills all equal more ammonia. Crowding fish causes even more. Because they may "fit" in a tank doesn't mean they'll be happy in crowded conditions. You can compare it to us trying to live in an elevator full of other people.
The one inch per fish rule stinks as I wrote in "Tips for Newbies Part Two" in the Tank Setup Thread. This rule applies to only very small fish. That rule is passed on to others too readily and seldom applies which only adds to newbies confusion. If you have two 5-inch fish would you put them in a 10 gallon tank? Of course not, but this rule applies that you can.
On closing, water changes should be done on a scheduled basis. Never more than two weeks between and again, more often depending on the kind of fish and how many in the tank. Goldfish are rather dirty and their water changes should be done weekly. Clean water = healthy fish.

First, thanks for the replies. I've had them in there for a year now and I'm in the process of getting a 55gal tank. This 10 gal was my first tank by the way so I'm a real newbie, first impulse was goldfish :) I use 1 HOB on it.
I will definitely do more reading as to what kind of colorful stuff I can put in this 10gal when the goldfish gets promoted to the bigger tank.
