would the african knife be ok with the cichlids? are they better in groups??
All knives are solitary. If you get him small he will get used to being with cichlids. So when he is big he will not eat them.

What about an African Butterfly fish? Or even a Peter's Elephant-nosed fish, those are my favorites.

I don't think they will ever eat at the surface like most fish, because of the shape of their mouth (which is the nose-like thing protruding from the head), mine never did. They do enjoy frozen blood worm, or any other frozen/live worm you can get at your lfs.
I've also tried making a cave for the elephant nose, and he was the only one that would go in there, becase all of my other fish hang out at the top. And I would put the worms in the cave, and he'd eat that.
But they are very cool to watch. I've had one a long time ago, and it was cool to watch its nose bend around in the substrate looking for food. They are also very good with tank mates; you could keep anything in there as long as it won't hurt/eat the elephant-nose.
Edit: and they can swim backwards, cool huh?

You could try a red tail/pink tail chalceus...those are fun! Or an african knife....and get this, I just found out that african knives are SCHOOLING KNIFEFISH!!! I've never heard of this before but they are! Anyways, one of those should be good.
