What do you guys think of keeping a jewel cichlid in the tank with GBR and bolivians? There are also bleeding hearts black neons and gold barbs in the tank. Thoughts on compatibility???
I read that they can be super aggressive and then I read they can be kept in community tanks. SO I'm a bit confused. I probably will chicken out anyway and not get one. Again with the paranoia.

Its a tough decision. They say they are only aggresive when spawning and also like to tear plants apart. Are you thinking of just one?

I personally wouldn't.
You get the occasional super peaceful jewel that doesn't bother anyone, but most of them are fairly agressive, and some of them are bordering on psychotic. All of them mess with plants though.
Nice fish, but in my experience with these guys, they are not suited to a community tank.
Agreed 100% with nick.. You "could" get a nice one but they are very very moody..

WEll I dont have any plants in that tank. But I was sort of thinking maybe one would be a better idea because I read if you get a pair they will not tolerate anyone in the tank while spawning. Thanks for the link. I think I might back out of the idea. I really want one but soon I'm getting another tank and was thinking that I could keep dwarf cichlids in it like kribs and slightly more aggressive dwarfs and then maybe I can get a jewel. What do you think? Better idea?
I would replace them with another type of dwarf cichlid.

Yeah, I have bolivians and I'm getting blue rams on tuesday. :19: I can't really find another dwarf ciclid that is peaceful enough for that tank. I just read sometimes the jewels can be little darlings but as others have posted not always :(
Anyone know another peaceful dwarf cichlid on a scale of bolivians or GBR ?

There are more dwarf cichlids out there than I think you realise. Plenty of suitable candidates besides jewels.
Sorry for the scientific names, but its the only easy way to make sure you know exactly what I am recommending.
Cleithracara Maronii
Laetacara curviceps
Mesonauta festivus
Laetacara dorsigerus
Dicrossus filamentosus
Apistogrammoides pucallpaensis
Apistogramma njessini
Apistogramma macmasteri
Apistogramma agassizii
Apistogramma Cacatuoides
Apistogramma borelli
Apistogramma panduro
Apistogramma viejita
Apistogramma eunotus
Apistogramma Hongsloi
Apistogramma ortmanni
Apistogramma geisleri
Apistogramma cruzi
Apistogramma gibbiceps
Apistogramma paucisquamis
Apistogramma rubrolineata
Apistogramma gephyra
Apistogramma commbrae
Apistogramma xingu
Apistogramma iniridae
and last but not least,
Apistogramma trifasciata
Just to name a few, I think Dave or Jess could probably expand on this list more than I can.
As you can see, there are quite a few apistogramma out there you can keep. Finding them can be tricky, you can special order or check on aquabid. Apistodave always has something too.

Thanks lots nick. thumbs2: Now the d#$% tank I was going to put them in has ick!!! So now I might have to skip two for tuesday:spam: I'm so mad. I am going to get some fish for my smaller tanks but man I'm so mad!! I have five days though. So maybe if I go with the salt method it will go away and then it wont be any different than the tank at the LFS because they use one tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons. the same ratio I plan to use.

I would give it a couple of weeks and use the meds as directed.Make sure you use carbon to get rid of it when you are done.
Get your cycle stabalized before adding any fish.
Go to your lfs and pay them to hold the fish you want until your tank is ready.

Think I'm going to go with the keyhole instead. They actually have them at my local fish store so I think that should work out a lot better than the jewel. Even though I still love the jewel. I'm going to try them in my other 55 when I get it set up. I'm going to do dwarfs in there too but more aggressive ones.
