I have been seeing some talk about carbon and that its best to not use it. With the type of filter that came with my tank, the cartridges had carbon in them. If I take the carbon out, do I replace it with anything else? Are there different cartridges you can be used?

I usually just cut the carbon out of my filter and just use the pad.

I dont use carbon in my filter for my 10g cause its just a hob with a sponge, but Carbon isnt necessary and theres a debate whether it caused HITH or not
