So, I'm reading posts about African cichlids and I always find it striking that only scientific names are used. I realise this is an acurate description but how the heck do you learn what to associate with those names.

My LFS doesn't even use scientific names so I cant learn it there... assorted africans is all thats on the tank.

Is there a good book to help learn more about them?
How did you learn their names?

Just get a good book - one with great photos. It's much better to use the scientific names. There's only one per species. Whereas you can have a handful of 'common' names per species - which ends up being more confusing.

Once you get used to the scientific names, they're just as easy as any others...

I hate trying to figure out the scientific names and correlating them w/ the common names too. I'd recommend one of the big picture atlases (Dr. Axlerods?)
