I know this has to be a regular topic but so many different answers to the same question.

So I will just ask away...

I have got a small silver arowana in a 90g tank for now. I know that I have to up grade right away but I am lost on what size to get. I have been told anywhere from 160 to 230. I have just looked at a tank in a store that was 72x18x18, would this be large enough? I was also looking into a custom 72x31x21. We also have a small sting ray that we would like to make room for in the tank as well.

Any help is great.

Thank you.

that custom 72x31x21 would be optimal size if you're planning on keeping this arrowana for a number of years. If the arrowana is small right now, the 90 gallon is good for awhile while you save up the $$$ for something huge.

Thank you for the reply,

Now we did start picking up stuff for the big tank. I started with a Filstar xp4 filter that will handle 265g tank. Will the one filter work for this large set up? This confuses me cause I was told that I needed 2 of these filters??????

for a tank that big i would get either a pair of fluval FX5 canisters or easier yet just get a 75g sump

2? really? why so many? We have 2 other tanks 45 and the 90 and only use one filter. Why so many on the 200 plus?

great thank you for the information.

So I understand that my Arowana will get very large. I'm just wondering why the 72x18x18 wouldnt work for this fish. Is the width just as important as the length for them?

yep, width is just as important. in the wild they can move any way 360 degrees and have swimming room, in standard aquariums there usually isnt much width. 18" wouldnt be enough side swimming room for him

You will need a huge tank for it.
A 72x24x24 would work.

arrowanas need very clean water. This is why you rarely see them in a 'stocked' tank. Try to keep tank mates to a minimum. The stingrays would probably be good mates with an arrowana since they occupy different places in the tank. I would love a big tank with a jardini arrowana and a couple teacup rays.

We got a motoro in with the arowana and they get along great. added a couple of clown loaches and a pleco. What about Koi? I hear they are a "dirty" fish. Would they work together? or just make more of a mess? I have seen it before but that was in a massive tank.

I don't think I would put a koi in that mix!
It just doesn't seem right!

koi would be too messy... bad idea IMO.
