Cameron's 55g Tropical Aquarium Journal

Briefing:
Alrighty It's finally Christmas and i got my 55g Aqueon Tank "Deluxe" Kit. With Heater, Filter, sample stuff, ect.. I got the filter out and running on my 29g (HOF)... LOL !thumbs2: So far its alright weird design with the 4-stage filtering but has high flow (325 GPH) Its kinda loud on the intake, it goes strait through the impeller from the tank to the filter, so no priming process(Cool, but a little louder..) But yea its there to help get it seeded for the big tank. I have one piece of Mopani? driftwood, and gonna get another. Going with some kind of aquarium sand, and gonna get a python also. I'm gonna go with the fishless cycle this round, (with pure ammonia).

Stocking:
Since this is going to be a tropical community im gonna go with:
12 - 15 probably Neon tetras(maybe cardinals depending on availability)
2 Dwarf gouramis (Im gonna try these guys out hoping they get along, if i can get females, how many..??)
I might get a smaller school of some kind of tetra, (Under 2").
6+ Emerald, or Peppered Corydoras

I think thats about it with fish, give me some ideas or suggestions I'm sure on the Neons and Corys but not too sure about how gouramis are gonna work out, and idk which tetras yet but we'll see how full my stocking options are.

Alright then guys and gals thanks for reading, PICS TO COME!!

I have 1 blue and 1 gold gourami with cardinals and they do great, but they're females so that is more than likely why. So as long as you get female gouramis, you should be fine.

Cameron
12-26-2008, 03:23 AM
yea idk if i can get ahold of some females i'll have to ask if they can order some or not and see what my options are..

A dwarf male would probably be okay.

The stand's coming along slower than planned but still good, its all done, and were working on the canopy. its getting stained tonight. Tomorrow im going to hte pet store to get another piece of driftwood, 20' python(siphon), im going to look for some sand, i might get some basic plants, im not sure the tank has VERY low light, like under 1 watt per gallon. I'm thinking thats about it besides some chemicals to test and treat the water, i'll get some pics loaded later today so please read and post for me guys!! :spam: thanks!

Looks really nice! I'm actually thinking about doing up a 55 myself. I'm trying to decide if it would be best to buy the 55g kit that comes at WalMart that includes filter/heater/hood/light for 178.99$ or if I want to just buy as I go and get the best. It would be slower, but I could buy one item at a time and get what I want.

yea i think thats what mine was about $175 i guess its your choice, all you really need is another filter , and maybe some more powerful lights.. thanks for posting guys!

EDIT: Since there are two 24" hoods, the fixtures would take 24" bulbs right, just need to be reassured in case i buy new light thanks

sorry for double post, but how about 1 dwarf gourami and 1 or 2 really small angelfish? Would they be ok with the neons, if they're small enough and the neon's are a decent size, but would they eat them as the angel fish got older? thanks again guys, and gals!

Alright i went shopping on Monday and got some stuff, and filled the tank. I have 20 lbs of black and another 20 lbs of white sand, i'm going to get another 10 pretty soon. I had my filter running on my other tank for 5 days, do u guys think that was enough to get it started? BTW im doing a fishless cycle with pure ammonia, what kind of levels should i keep the ammonia at???? yesterday evening was Ammonia: 1 nitrite: ...blue(the kit i got didnt come with a card) and my Nitrates: like not 0 but a little under 5. Should i just keep the ammonia at 1 or what. I WILL upload some pics today so tag along for later. Thanks for any help u can give me.:help:

That's a nice reef you got there! As for your questions.....

That could be enough to get started, but I personally prefer a deeper substrate for planted tanks. I would personally add another 20 or 40lbs on there, but it would be easier to tell how much more you need with a pic. A deeper substrate makes planting easier. You will also need to slope your substrate. It could be as thin as 1" at the front, and as think as 6" at the back. 2"-4" is more common though.

During a fishless cycle you should try and keep ammonia around 3ppm, it cycles faster that way. However if you are planning on putting in some platns during the cycle (which I don't recommend) keep it at 1ppm.

The nitrates you have were probably already in your water out of the tap, doesn't mean anything. When you get the tank set-up try and keep nitrates between 5-10ppm, that doesn't mean you should cut back on water changes though, just add some nitrogen in the form of a liquid or dry ferilizer if it gets too low.

Most angelfish will try to eat neons, as it is their "natural prey" in the wild. In their natural habitat, fish are a rare treat, so as so as they realise they can eat them they'll go crazy over them. Its possible that if you have a big enough school the angels will lose track and only be able to pick off a couple. And it is entirely possible that your angels may ignore the neons altogether, not likely though. It depends if you want to take a gamble or not.

Check out the new pics.. The cycle isnt going as fast a s i wanted but oh well, i got some seeded gravel in it now so im hoping it'll speed up some ammonia: 5 Nitrites: light blue(didnt come with color card) Nitrates: 0.. Its getting pretty leached with tannins which doesnt look too bad but oh well it looks nice cant wait for plants and fish!!

Make sure you guys comment the pics on page 2 there's a bunch!

Anyways i was wondering if after my tank cycle by the fishless cycle, should i add like half the fish at a time. And if i have to add a few at a time, should i go corys first, or the neon tetras? i know the dwarf's arent very tough with new aquariums.

Please comment though people, i have like 16 of these 22 posts and its kind of depressing thanks for all the help guys!!:help:

So I want a stand just like yours!
Was it hard to build? how long did it take you? and where did you get the plans?
Also how long untill you get plants and fish in there?

Well my dad made it, he took measurements and asked my how high i wanted it off the ground, so i measured a little lower than my armpits so i can reach the bottom without running out of room. He made it by just his little sketch, which took him like 6 hours to build or something. Heres a website that has plans: http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php They look pretty good. My dad said his wasnt that hard, but re remodels and is a handyman so idk about that, he said it took longer than expected.

Is it made with 2x4s or 4x4s?

Cameron

We used 2 x 4's soo it might be safer it use 4's but i dont think for a tank this size

ALSO my cycle is stuck, its been at 3ppm ammonia for like 3 or 4 days now and theres this white see thru substance on the one piece of driftwood its in one the pics on pg 2, please help if u can..

its like cleaning ammonia, it says active ingredient is ammonium hydroxide

Wild Turkey

its like cleaning ammonia, it says active ingredient is ammonium hydroxide

Thats the ammonia + hydrogen, its in all ammonias you can buy in the store. If it doesnt have any soap (surfactants) you are good.

PURE ammonia is dangerous and not easily available as its also used in improvised warfare devices and can burn your skin.

LIQUOR AMMONIA is ammona + water and it what you are looking for.

Everything looks great so far, your dad really did a wonderful job on the stand, and it sounds like you had him make it just the right height. Thats using ur head thumbs2: :19:

so my ammonia is good, it doesnt say it has anything like the detergents. I fit is why has there been no ammonia changes in 5 days Ammonia = 4 Nitrite = 0 Nitrate = 0 pH = 7.6, maybe a bit higher

EDIT: And whats with the fungus stuff on the driftwood

Finally, anyone wanting to build a stand, check out the link above.. That is what I based my stand on (currently under construction) and believe me when I say this.. you can park a buick on it.

Patience is really the key w/ cycling. Keep the ammonia at 4 ppm until you see nitrites forming. Then keep it at 2 ppm each day until it and nitrites bothe read 0 24 hours after adding ammonia. Then you can do a large water change and add fish. My cycle took a month or more. It's something you can't rush, and I know it's a pain to wait.

Your stand and canopy look really good! I need to do something like that myself. My dad has all the tools; I just need to buy the wood then go give him a visit.

Alright, sounds good.. i just hate the waiting sometimes, and its starting to look soo good, im gonna scrub the peice of wood and get it back in there. I thought i wouldnt like the look of the tannins, but i'm starting to really enjoy it, it looks more natural, like the difference between incadesent and floresent lighting. I'll post i pic up tomarrow or something thanks for the help!

GREAT NEWS MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED! lol anyways

The fungus stuff is going away on its own. AND we have nitrites i did a 25% WC yesterday cause the ammonia wasnt going down lately . So my tests were Ammonia : 4 or 5 Nitrite : 0 Nitrate : 0. Today they are Ammonia : 2 Nitrites : 3 or 4 Nitrates : 5.

So considering my tests after the WC should i add a bit of ammonia or should i wait until it drops to 0? thanks for any help.

Cameron

Hey guys its been a few days i think lol. Ammonia is constantly being 0 ppm each morning so thats good, the nitrites are about 4 ppm and the nitrates are like 40 ppm last time i check so once the nitrites catch up i'll be ready for fish..

Speaking of fish i need your opinion on which fish should go in first the neons, corys or glowlights?? i know gouramis are out of it cause they're sensitive to new tanks. Should i add the neons in a group of like 7 and 7?? Should i add 7 neons, 4 corys, and then add the rest in a week??? Anyways thanks for any answers. Help is appreciated i really cant wait to get some fishies in there~!

Looks beautiful! What type of lights do you have on the tank? I really like the look of them and I'm currently setting up a 55 so any suggestions there are great.

Also, I noticed you used the plate while adding water, does that really work? I have a certain look I want for my tank and I want to aquascape while there isn't any water in the tank, but I'm worried about how much the sand will mix and so forth. I'm using two different kinds divided and don't want to mix them.

Just the stock lighting, its an aqueon 15 watt lights x2. The plate helps keep the sand still. But it kind of splashs upwards. Thanks for looking at my thread!!:19:

Yay! The other person from NE, OH. I'll get you a NE Ohio buddy gift soon. :22:

Yeah, what store did you buy them from? Also, its looking great.

I got them from my pet supplies plus, after my bad experiences with petsmart.
I'll get you one too!

Pretty good, they the anubias nana are almost constantly needing to be propogated. They're starting to grow algae on the leaves, soon im going to get half my school of neons (12) and probably 6 otos for algae eating.

I've decided to not plant until my cycle is finished, and also when I can afford plants and soil, lol.

I had two of these once and they were really fun to watch. I've since only gotten albino cories, but only because they hardly ever have emerald ones around here.

Wow that is a great setup! When you use sand is there anything special you have to do? I know you need to clean the gravel every now and then, do you have to change sand?

Also, For your plants, what kind of care do they need?

Thanks, you just have to stir up the sand every couple of weeks, and vacuum the debris off the top of it. You shouldn't have to change sand.

My plants require almost no work, i just keep lights on for about 6 hours a day, and propagate them when they need to be.
