Can anyone tell me what causes a fantail goldfish to lay at the bottom of the tank bed? My daughters fish is gasping for breath and it has a white spot on it where it goes toilet, my son has another fish in the tank too but it's fine. I really want to know what's caused this as my daughter does'nt want her Barbie to die!:help:

It could be swim bladder disease. Do NOT feed the fish for a week or so and it might clear up.

I don't have a digital cam, but it's just like a small pimple covering it's bottom passage.

What are your water parameters like?

dont feed him for a week but do feed him boiled peas for a couple of days.
how old is the fish? I had a goldfish from the 70's and he died from swim bladder. in 2004.

I've had the fish for about 2 yrs now and i read about the feeding it boiled peas thing but i was'nt too sure to try it as i did'nt know what was wrong with her but i will try it when i can start giving her food again, but what about the other fish thats fine would'nt it starve if i don't put any food in the tank?

Fish can go for up to a month with out food. it is actually good for him sometimes, because it "clears out the pipes" and keeps him healthy.

Another question, once Barbies well again what other things besides fish flakes can i feed them and how often or should i just stick to the goldfish flakes?

I would either skip feeding one day a week, or feed peas one day a week.

fish are very fine without food. They can go 1 month without food.
Feed him regular food in about 1 week.
IF he doesnt get better, consider eunathuasion. I hope he'll get better.

Fish can go up to a month without food is they are healthy
and it's better to feed a variety of food

01-28-2007, 02:16 AM
yeah. variety is the key to excellent color and keeping them interested in the food.

Also foods high in carotene will make your fishes color REALLY stand out. Some foods are Tetra color, colormax, and bio color.
