Hello, just have a general question on goldfish residing in bowls. I know that goldfish use very low concentrations of oxygen, (some info I've read states they use 3 ppm of oxygen in a given volume of water) but to what parameters must be met to successfully keep a goldfish in a bowl...other than moderating feedings, and conditioning the water. I thought of taking some water from my rohm tank, (its params are all at zero) to fill the bowl. Basically, what are some good rules of thumb for a pearlscale in a two gallon bowl to survive well?

IMO the best thing to do is not put it in there. Against common belief a bowl is way to small.

1. Don't do it.
2. Please don't do it.
3. Really please don't do it.

unless you can get a 33g+ bowl with a filter on it, no way. there are no fish that belong in a tank less than 5g, and no goldfish that can go in anything less than 20g

The goal should always be to do the best we can to allow our fish to thrive, a bowl prohibits this completely.
...in some countries (forgot which one) goldfish bowls are now prohibited I believe. They're considered cruel...

Rome, Italy as well. I think others have passed similar laws already.

Agreed with all of the above. Goldifsh grow rather large, and are supposed to live for 20-30 years. In a bowl they will not grow at all due to poor water conditions and no room, and will only live 2-3 years, if that.

and algae but a bowls good for algae sorry for all that pleas dont kill me :14:
Well okay, a bowl to grow algae to feed to other fish? Cool, that works.
Keeping a Goldfish in a bowl will critically shorten it's life span. A Goldfish will not live a happy and healthy life in a bowl. Goldfish produce too much waste to be kept in a bowl. The bowl would require weekly, if not more, cleaning and water changes to prevent deadly ammonia build up. A single Goldfish requires a 20+ gallon filtered tank.

I like goldfish, after a few yrs I end up having to find people with outdoor ponds to adopt them.
Given that space and natural environment they grow even faster.
I have 2 that will be to large for their 40 gal tank in a few yrs. Maybe i'll get a huge tank for them, or put in my own outdoor pond.
As it applies to your dilemma, they wont be bowl sized for very long.
my advice to anyone wanting a gold fish is, if you have no room to put up a bigger tank in a year, don't.
If you do, get only 2. Not 4 or 6 because they are little.
they are like puppies.... they dont stay little for long.
