I have a bunch of gift cards to petsmart and need a new filter.
Are in tank filters better then HOB? I HATE the cascading water when the levels get low, so I though I would spend the money and get the Fluval, but have no experience with canisters. Do they work well? Is there anything equally as good and cheaper? How is the upkeep compaired to a HOB?

Id get a Rena Canister...IMO it is the easiest to use canister on the market. Its also got alot of media options and versatility...you could setup a spraybar attachment or the power jet attachment for the return and really customize your tanks circulation to your needs. There are 4 models the XP1, XP2, XP3, XP4....the number after the XP is how many media baskets your filter has...each basket has a maximum capacity of holding 2literes of media. For tanks 25G and under I would recomend the XP1, 25-50G the XP2, 50-75G XP3 and over 75G the XP4.

I like my canister filter a lot more for the exact same reason. It's less noisy when water levels get low. You might not get as much surface agitation with a canister filter, so you might have to make sure you an air pump going.

i love canisters, you can submerge the output as low as you like. i would go with a fluval, if this is for your 55g i would go with a 405
I like canisters too.. But i would go with the fluval ort the rena..

the fluval intanks are great you can reuse the filter sponge forever just rinse it out every once and awhile, in my 55g i have two fluval 30's, best thing is they are completely silent and cheap
Hi,
I love Fluval Canister filters. IMO I find the Fluval 304 to be great for 50 gallon tanks.

I have a Fluval on my 55gal...and HOBs on the rest. I like the Fluval and have had no problems. However, I have read that they are prone to leaks as the seal damages easily....

I think the leaks are with the external systems. I am looking at ones that sit in the tank and are completely submerged.

That's right...I don't know why, but I assumed you were referring to external...:11:

Hello,
Even i don`t know much about it, but recently i was browsing cybershoppers ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]), to purchase a aquarium, there i saw different types of filter and they have many food items for fish too, you can try that, it could be some help to you.

To the above post.
I bought a Fluval 4 Plus
260 GPH
I love it. Silent.
Also, enough force to blow my Severum over, lol. I had to point the jet at the glass to difuse the stream. It seems like it will do a far better job the the aquaclear I was using and for $65 it better!
I have not read this whole thread.
But I never have any trouble with Canister filters.
