My eel loves his/her shrimp but that has to get boring after a while. I was thinking about buying some feeder fish for him/her but was not sure if that would be a good idea. What are your thoughts on the matter? Also, is there something cheaper I can buy instead of the frozen krill for $5? I thought I read something saying small peeled shrimp worked just as fine but I can't find that article anymore so I am very hesitant.

Thanks!

Where am I able to buy mussels at? The LFS? I have never asked them or recall seeing them but maybe.

Any other opinions on feeder fish?

The biggest threat is giving your pet a sick fish. So, you really should quarantine them for a while in a tank with good quality water.

I've given my oscars sick minnows a couple times with out keeping them sepperated for a couple weeks and they've gotten ick as a result, which never feels too good on my part. I know they love hunting them.. But you just have to be careful.

And I dont know anything about eels, but coldwater feeder fish are supposed to be bad as a staple diet for oscars since they contain a high content of something that reacts badly with their digestive track.

So, maybe do some googling.

I assume the eels we are discussing are the morays in your avatar? If so do not feed them freshwater feeder fish. Their nutritional value is very low and they are not good for marine creatures. Mussels can be purchased through a grocery store just make sure they are fresh. I think the best food you could give them would be frozen silversides. These should be available through a local fish store. Get some aquarium tongs or a bamboo skewer and jiggle a silverside in front of them and they should grab it.

Depending on the size/type of eel...id look into some Massivore Delite, or Sinking Carnivore by Hikari. Each pellet of the Massivore Delite has the nutrion of almost 2 average feeder golds
