View Full Version : Should I end the misery?

Recently my neons were 95% diagnosed with NTD. One of my noens started having mini seizures in the water yesterday. Now today, he seems really tired and twitches almost constantly sometimes to where he has trouble staying horizontal. He still has the little mini spaz attacks. Should I be putting him out of his misery? I hate having to decide this.

If they are going to die it's best to not let them suffer.

I know.. but there's still that chance that its not NTD and I would have killed them for nothing.. :(

You can put some tank water in a bag and place your fish in it,then place in the freezer. You can throw out the bag, compost or bury it.
Its a drag but its better for your fish!
I don't know whats wrong with your fish but it doesn't sound good. Good luck!

Freezing to death doesn't sound to pleasant...

With a tiny fish like neons it'd be the instant least painful although rather nasty way to just smash their heads with something or decapitation.

It's never pretty but we owe it to our little friends to not let them suffer.

Never flush your fish!
The garbage is your best bet than.

We're not fish, so we'll never really know, but I think that the idea for why the freezer is a humane method of euthansia for fish is a good one.

Basically, because fish are cold blooded (not warm blooded like us), they will not feel discomfort or pain as the water temperature lowers. The lowering of their body temperature will slow their metabolism until they go to sleep (actually a hibernative state) and therefore they will not be concsious as they freeze.

Sorry to hear about your neons, fishymommy. I know you are trying to do what is best for them and keep them from suffering. :11:

Thanks. I'm just trying to make sure they're happy before they go out. I can tell the others are aggitated now tho. They've lost three friends in the past week so I bet that has to be weird. They are fighting more and sometimes resort to swimming up and down the wall but other than that seem happy and eat well.

Oh and the clove oil and vodka, I would probably get kicked out for having alcohol since I live in a dorm so that wouldn't work.

If I have more trouble in the future I might try the freezer thing. It sounds calm and easy for the fish.

Thanks for tips
