View Full Version : More Annoyance From My Local Pet-Shop.
Hi,
I was in town today, and I went to the pet shop for a look around. Well I was shocked and discussed. They had some one fish, which they where holding in their tanks. Well what is ticking me is they, were Jewel Cichlids x20 Oscars x2 [5 inches long] Severum x3 [8 inches to 3 inches.] Now for me what I found to be very annoying was that they have them all in the same tank. Now I am on the same water as them. And the pH is 7.0 exactly. The tank is only 90 liters.
And it has one very tiny whisper filter on it. The tank is very yellow. And the bottom of the tank is covered in S###. And it looks bad. Now I the main reason I am grumpy is they don't even have a air filter in the tank. The poor fish are gasping. It is gutting.
What I don't get is why they don't separate the fish. They can easily do that. It just makes no sense. But mind you they don't seem to care anyway. They are at least starting to get better. but no by much. May-be 5% better then when they first started 3 years ago.
My trouble is I have suggested to them to set up tanks for holding fish for people. But they say they don't need to. And they wont take any advice. Now I would love to write a letter to the and the movement watch, about the fish keeping of our pet shop. But they are a very next door nab-ours. And you just can't quite do that. And more so in NZ. Because you can rouen you name. So I am sorry but I have to let vent on here.
Cheers,
mac
Edit. The Jewel look not that great either. They look very stressed. Like more stressed than any fish I have seen, next to the Discus that they had one time, which was very black. Other wise who ever was looking after these fish must have done a great job. because they all look quite healthy. But they don't right now.

Is it a big store?
I've told people at petsmart its effing disgusting that their oscar tanks have dead fish in them. Then suddenly when the tall guy swears its like they never noticed and hop to it.
Maybe you have to lose your cool a bit and let them have it. But then I know how small shops are, and that isn't the best idea heh.

*blushes*...
I have been known to throw a tantrum or two in a pet shop once or twice....
and made sure that there were people who heard...and pointed out the problems...loudly...so clients could hear.....
was amazing how quicky the situation improved........:18:

Haha you guys are awesome! You should ban together and make an international fish squad where you go into bad fish stores and tell them what's what. I could list a few places for you to go around here :D

The reason I got my job managing my LFS is because I threw a small fit over the discust of their tanks. Imagine cheap blue gravel with paint flaking off and sh*t laying everywhere poor sponge only filtration dirty algae covered tanks...bad advice and the display tanks in no way possible had enough filtration they were so cloudy you couldnt see into them.
Hi,
Thanks guys for your thoughts.
HMM I will think about it. It is a small shop. And since the owner of the shop lives in the house next door to us, it is kind of hard, as well. HMM but it dose get me thinking. I may just have to do it diplomatically. Just politely say that this tank has to many fish of the wrong species with not enough aerator or filtration to cope with this.
My main trouble is I don't think I can say anything. This is far more different than the Library situation. So I am stuck. Maybe I could hire some of you guys to come over and sort it out.:19:

Next door hey? Maybe talking to him/her over the fence is the place to voice your concern. Some place away from their usual social status that inclines them to say, no you're wrong.
But then being at home could support a worse reaction then in the store.

I'd say discuss it at home, it may be better and more ...er... relaxing?
OR you could throw a hissy-fit in the store - like a MAJOR one! Kicking the floor and flapping your arms! It may work!
Goodluck!

That sucks to see. Me being a betta fanatic, I drive the people at pet smart crazy. Just this saturday, I was going through the bettas just looking and picking out the dead ones the ones with pop eye and fungus. I know I drive them crazy. I handed her one dead one that had been dead a looooong time. I told her that it had been dead a while. She said it hadn't been dead a long time, she said she had just changed their water on Monday. Hello!!!! It is saturday!!!! My friend just got hired there so I tried not to be my usual self and be a bit nicer than I normally would have. since they know we are best friends. It makes me mad. I can't help but be rude.

HMM. Acutely all I have to do is, simply mix some chemicals which I can pick up. And then well run like made.:19: Acutely I can't do that. IMO I would nearly blow up half the section they are in.
But that is a idea. I might get some one to do that for me? Just joking.
As for talking it over with the folks. I have been doing that for hrs.
And it has go very stressful.
Cheers all. I feel better now that I have it off my chest.

One of my LPS's is terrible - it's a chain of course!
ALL their tanks share the same filtration system so once one tank has ich, they all get it!
3/4 of the goldfish are permanantly suffering with Ich and i've now seen it spread to the tropicals. Dead fish lying for days and the tanks never seem to get cleaned.
I heard a customer asking about mixing goldfish in with tropicals and the guy said "yeah that should be fine"....
Luckily before i had to step in he actually asked someone that knew and corrected his statement.
I've thought about reporting them a couple of times but i am doubtful that anyone would care if i did. I just find it funny that our local gardening centre takes better care of it's aquatic section than the lfs doesh

We have one small independent place nearby, like a general purpose pet store. They have about 50 small tanks (10 gal. mostly) loaded up with all kinds of fish....really anything you'd want, but they are so crammed in there it is ridiculous. The only fish that look really well cared for are the discus - beautifully colored and in a nice, big, well-filtered tank. Amazing - they must move a lot of fish there (at least I hope they do)...the tanks are always full when I am stop in - which is not very often.
