I had an idea to get more bio surface so I went to my flower bed gathered some lava rocks, cut up a milk crate to create a place for the rocks anyways I got a pic.First the overflow hits filter floss then goes to the lava rock river ,which is exposing the rocks just at the top of water lvl, then its onto the bio rings in a sock setting on top filter floss. what do you think anyone have opinion?

FW or SW setup? I hope you cleaned off those rocks very well. They were probably covered in things, you would not in your tank. But it seems like a good plan.

Have you tested your water before and after to see what effect your lava rock is having on your water?
It looks like a good plan but I would love to hear how well its working!

Ya the rocks were boiled in epsom salt and rinsed well.I have tested water and not reading any ammonia, nitrite or nitrate yet lol.Been havin problems getting the temp above 74 deg,s we have been getting below zero weather and tank is on outside wall I better get a bigger heater atm running a 150w and a 100 watt. Will be watching water parameters close will let ya know.If it does well I will add more rocks.Oh it,s FW sump

Northernguy was mainly referring to the lava rock possibly effecting your tank's pH.
