Hello everyone!
Some of you may know that right now I am in Mexico visiting. Because I feel stressed if I dont go to a fish store for a while, I decided to go to the local "Fish Market". I am amazed. I expected livestock to be cheaper than it is in Canada, but it is even disgusting!!!
As an example (all numbers are in Canadian Dollars)
Zebra danios ----- in Canada, $3.00 each. Here, $0.01 each !!!!!
Amazon sword ----in Canada, $15.00 each. Here, $3.00 each !!!
Elodea --------- in Canada, $7.50. Here, a huge bunch was less than $1.00
I cant believe it! The difference is huge! Its a pity I wont be allowed to bring livestock when I get back to Canada....
... and just FYI, while ornaments, tanks and live food are also cheaper (sometimes much cheaper too), in general equipment and dry food are about the same price ...
Ugh! Sorry, I just needed to tell you this. How are prices in the US? Somewhere in between? How about Europe and Australia?

Niiiiiiiice prices!!!!!!!!!!!! Depressing when you back to your own LFS and see the prices again...just shows how much profit they make!
Here (Netherlands) nearly all plants are between $2 and $5
Simple fish like Neons, Zebra Danios are around $1 each
Hi,
Those prices would be nice to pay. Do they have a good large selection of fish?
As for the prices in Australia I can't say. But in NZ they are all over the place.
Some of the shops from time to time get swamped with home breeders. So the prices go down. But normally Neon Tetras are $7.90 NZ, but when a breeder has droped of a 1000+ then they are down to $1.00 at times each.
Other wise most things are the same price. Plants are not cheap, at all. A lot of people grow the plants and just hand them around to friends. As for the food, that is cheap or dear depending on what you buy. If you buy JBL then if you are in the cyct you will pay $14.00 while if you are in the country twon you can pay up $20.00. And the same with filters. SO really we are quite expensive.

Hey, Thanks!
Mac, I didnīt spend a long time there, but I did see a variety of fish. Saw several types of discus (those ones were expensive - about $ 90 CND), and many of the common ones: angelfish, corys, plecos, tetras, goldfish, livebearers, some saltwater... I thought it was pretty decent...
Tolley, that sounds like same as what I pay back in Canada... how about other fish? Oh, and Cocoa, I usually donīt go to petsmart. That may be cheaper, but my lfs is (now I realize) very expensive, it seems!

Thanks for the reply. A average Discus here is from $190-$200.00 each.
Other wise evything is from $1-2 up to $200+. Plants are around $5.00 to %15.00 each.

Wow, too bad you can't take any plants home with you.
But the price is prolly about the same, when you take into consideration people's income, which I assume is a lot lower than in Canada.

You'd all be disgusted what the wholesale prices are for aquarium livestock. Neon tetras run 22 cents per, 16 cents if you buy 1,000 or more. Zebra danios are six cents each, and even the retail price for rare freshwater fish are about 10 times what the wholesale price is.
Getting a wholesale license involves jumping through hoops for the state and national government and ponying up, but it sure beats the dickens out of retail if you have one. Tax credit is handy, as well.

Think I see danio's anywhere from $1-2 here, neon tetras $1-$3. Those amazon swords vary in price I think usually around $6-10. The chain stores are usually on the low side. The higher prices are from the small mom and pop lfs.

Green with envy at those prices. So far the cheapest for me has been getting fish from their rescue tanks for free. The fish/plant auctions at the local aquarium club meetings go fairly cheap too, but not even close to those wholesale prices.

Well, yes, income is a lot less than it is in Canada. That's for sure... but my feeling is that there are other factors involved in this as well.... maybe the weather is better for growing plants...
... and ever since the NAFTA was signed, the average income (at least in Mexico City) is getting higher...
The sad part of the story is that the things that I could bring with me (such as equipment and dry food) are about the same price.... Oh! I forgot to look for a python or something similar! Now I need to go again!
