furnace filters are fiberglass. . .not sure what that means but you might wanna do some research before maybe introducing any fiberglass dust or something into the water. Gills might not like that so much.
I assume that the filters would not have that problem though as otherwise they would also push the dust into our air vents. :-)

you can use the bonded poly material, usually blue on one side.
Foam has gotten expensive, it is made from petroleum and they use butane to expand it

Why not use Aquarium cotton fibre, its cheap enough.
Get a bag of pillow cotton.I don't recommend fibreglass.

Either of those options are fine and cheap. No fiberglass

How about just some coarse foam from a hardware store or wherever you might buy that. That's all the sponges are anyway. Just make sure it's not been treated with any chemicals.

Make sure the sponge you buy is open cell, and not treated with chemicals. Oh just recently because winter is approaching, I was able to get a large piece of sponge about 14x14x4 for only a few bucks. Store was getting rid of their summer stock of bbq's, pond accessories and those sorts of things.

Have you checked on line stores to see what accessories your sump uses? $30 is a bunch for a sponge but we have to remember they do not get tossed out but just rinsed out and used over and over again. One could last you for years. But, I'm with ya on $30. About $20 too much!
I'm wondering why upholstery foam can not be used. You should be able to find that in any hobby store or sewing center and cut it to fit.

Someone mentioned using evaporator foam pads for a dehumidifer from homedepot, that you can buy in sheets.
Here is a link I found with some prices and stuff on foam for tanks from various stores, [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

I looked into upholstery foam about a month ago and it is priced where you would not only have to give an arm youd have to give a leg for it too($60+ some change)! That was for a cubic foot of it too.
