It would probably be more expensive. A tiny container of sea salt for food is a couple of bucks. Also the crystals are huge and would take longer to dissolve.
This is the brand I bought, the crystals are small and dissolve fast:

And the smallest package is 1.4 lbs for $4, probably a lot cheaper than food grade stuff. I bought the 7lb bag ($14) and it'll last me a good long time.

In order to do a proper brackish tank you really should use marine salt.

I just put some sea salt i bought at wal mart its fairly cheap a bought 80 cents for a pound or so I've been checking the levels of salinity with a hydrometer but am not sure if i should start adding fish yet. What is the difference between marine salt at a pet store and ocean salt bought at a grocery store?

Salt at the grocery store is meant to be consumed. Salt bought at a pet store is meant to be used for a fish tank. It contains elements to get the water's pH close to the right level and contains minerals needed to help living creatures. I'm guessing, you do not know about cycling a fish tank. You should read the free Ebook provided by this site before even thinking about adding fish. Click here (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/ebook.html) for the Ebook.

I would recommend using marine salt only. Its not that expensive. I bought a 50 lb box for $60 3 months ago and I still have close to 40 lbs left. This should last me close to a year.

Use only marine salt. Brackish are fish that are born in freshwater and migrate to areas where the ocean and freshwater lakes, rivers meet. Some BW fish will go full marine when adults. It's easy to get confused at first, most do. I would recommend using a refractometer over the hydro. If you look around you can find them fairly cheap and well worth the money spent if you plan on this for the "long haul".:santatext:
