Reading through some of the threads on the forun I was surprised
at how many people have pet names for their fish.
So who names their fish and what is the best/most original name
that you have come up with?

I do not name my fish... buy my 125 lb mutt is named Bubba ;)

Of all my fish I can only identify 3 or 4 as individuals and be sure it is the same fish each time.

My big oscars name is Tooch,
My little oscars name is Heff,
My big jac dempseys name is newman,
and my little JD's name is ponch.

My other fish I haven't named. Just the cichlids. They do the most and inspire. However the names really dont reflect personality. Fortunately in newmans case lol

Robin(Betta) because he has blue, exactly the colour of Robins eggs.

Scotty(Betta) named because I bought him on a day that I heard from a friend in Scotland.

Pete(Betta)...

Michaela, Belle, Rachael, Olive, and Madeline(Girl Bettas)...just for fun, and they are all different.

Frank is my Syno...because it suits him...

Annabelle is my Angelfish...I'm not sure why she's Annabelle...it just happened.

"Little Guy"...my Leopard Ctenopoma, because he was so small when I got him, and the name "stuck."

I obviously don't name them all, but some of my fish just seem to need to be named! I think it has to do with fish that have a distinct personality!

I do and I don't. For the schooling fish I don't.

But the goldfish I name. Esp. since they have the potential to live so long. But I'm not creative - they're more descriptors so I can talk about them and everyone know which fish I mean...

The speckled fantail: Speckles
The oranda: Elvis
The calico telescope eyes: Telly
The lionhead: Felix (after the nice Walmart employee who caught him for me)
The pearlscale: Pearl

I don't think I've ever named a fish, even when I was a kid. Seemed a moot point.

When I was a kid and we had a pond of comets and shubunkins I remember giving some of the stand-outs names for types of sharks and whales (Killer, Hammerhead, Blue, Thresher, etc).

Of the ones I have owned later on, a few of the cichlids and center-piece type fishes picked up names, but they were given by kids. For example, my niece named my red devil Timmy (after my dad, Tim) and it kind of stuck.

I'm really embarrassed about what I named my Tomato clown... Well, my mom actually came up with the idea, and I liked it...
Belinda......what....it just fits my clown's personality :P

I also had a Volitan Lionfish who I named Volvo, after the car.

Also, every shrimp I get HAS to be named shrimpy... That's just the way it is, lol. I can have over 40 shrimp in one tank, yet they're all named shrimpy.

Once, I bought a second hand tank. I was inhabited until pretty much the minute I bought it by some platies... so, when I filled it up again in my house to start it up I noticed a minute baby platy. Because he had survived being in an almost empty tank and now he was completely safe, I named him "Tsuki" (Japanese for "Lucky"). Other than that, I can't remember naming any other fish...

I named the 3 gudgeons I have because there are so few and each one is pretty easy to distinguish from the other. It makes it easier to refer to them as individuals. If I can't tell one fish apart from another, they don't get names.

My former dwarf gourami was named El Guapo.
My crowntail is named Sir Percival.
When I was a kid and kept fish, I named my guppy Gups.

None of my other fish have names.
